Cubbies drop 2...looks like this series is over. Doesn't 2008 make it an even 100 years without a championship?
I actually forgot all about the MLB playoffs. I had been too into football and that combined with the Astros suckitude.... actually, I blame me not having a tv in my room at the moment. I moved my 42inch LCD to the living room for now. Going to get an hd reciever for this 22inch Samsung LCD i have though.
i hope the Cubs can win the next 2 games. then, when they take a 3 run lead in the 9th in game 5, the Diamondbacks can hit a walk off grand slam to crush the heart of Chicago.
I heard the greatest analogy this morning on Bob and Tom from some random comedian. "Cheering for the Yankees is like going to the casino, standing around the blackjack table, and cheering for the house."
I always love seeing the Yankees get their asses handed to them, especially Wang. I don't know why but that dude pisses me off more than any other Yankee and that includes Rodriguez and Jeter. Good luck in beating Carmona today! And I don't understand why so many people hate the Cubs. I mean I am not pulling for them to win the NL but if they make it to the World Series (which is very doubtful at this point) and win against the AL. It wouldn't be the end of the world, would it? I would pull for the Cubs against the Angels and most definitely the Yankees in the World Series. Some of you, *ahem* MadMax, act like the Cubs are more evil and reviled than the Yankees. No, they're not.
Eh, true but come on, Zac. The Cubs have been laughable losers for years. I mean, ****, the gap between them winning their last World Series and the Astros starting as a franchise in 1962 is longer (53 years) than the Astros' entire existence (45 years). I guess I could see the enmity more if the Astros have gone longer than the Cubs in winning a WS, but that hasn't been the case.
It's the relationship the 'stros and Cubs have had. It was made a lot worse in the 2004 race when there was the animosity between Oswalt and Barrett. Cubs fans are over the top annoying. Way too "trendy." I honestly can't stand the Cubs. We've had a bigger rivalry with the Cards, but I respect the Cards. The Cubs have been hard to respect.
Titles are largely irrelevant, I think. Do Red Sox fans harbor special hate for the Cardinals? The Astros and Cubs have been division rivals for better than a decade now and have played some extremely important, high-intensity games. Instances of Yankee relevancy to Astros history are approximately twofold, and neither is a reason to hate them - Mantle hit the first home run in the Astrodome, and the laughable six-pitcher no-hitter in '03. Hatred of the Cubs by Astros fans is based on an actual, intense on-field rivalry that has developed a lot in recent years. Hatred of the Yankees by Astros fans is primarily media-generated, which isn't as likely to stick. Think of it this way. Would Yankees fans still hate the Red Sox if they hadn't won that series in '04? Would Red Sox fans still hate the Yankees if New York hadn't won so many more titles than Boston? I would argue that the answer in both cases is yes.
This may have been posted and if so, my bad, but....... How the hell are the D-backs even in the playoffs? I read a stat that blew me away: last in the NL in batting average with .250. (the Stros were at .260). So I thought, OK they don't hit well overall, but they do hit well with guys in scoring positions, right? Nope, dead last in that category too at .249 (Stros were at .267). If this isn't definitive proof, that pitching and defense win championships, I don't know what is.
And did you know that they have scored less runs than they have given up?? I thought that was the most amazing thing about them being in the playoffs.
So wait, one team out of 8 that can't hit (that hasn't gotten out of the first round yet!) proves that pitching and defense win championships?
I will say this for the Bosox: they have almost made me root for the Yankees. At least Yankees fan acknowledge that they have a huge edge over every other team, hell some of them even seem to feel a little bad about it. Nothing pisses me off like Boston fans trying to play the underdog card. Gee, so you only have the 2nd highest paytool, geez, that's rough. For example this quote from Bill Simmons: "This is a franchise that spent more than $265 million the past three winters on Dice, Drew, Edgar Renteria, Matt Clement and Julio Lugo". Any other team (except the Yankess of course) would be wrecked for years after those mistakes. The bandwagon Bosox fans that have sprouted since 2004 are insufferable.
But the team that they are currently beating in the playoffs has better pitching than they do. That seems like non-definitive proof that worse pitching = championships.
