I'm a little surprised MLB's CBT offer has risen as much, but club controlled salaries are really low still.
Min MLB salaries are getting a >20% increase overall, and top producing controlled players will get a lot more. That's a big win I think, especially given how flat these salaries had been.
Considering MLB likely won't have to change structure of club control and that these salaries are still a joke versus what the veterans get, I would give MLB winning big on salaries for club controlled players with MLBPA winning big for veterans if things go the way they are looking. This is the exact opposite of what I wanted. It will lead to continued animosity between players and owners as club controlled players will continue to blame owners instead of the MLBPA for selling them out.
I get what you are saying, but… the salaries are going up 20-30% for all the bottom guys and the pre-arb pool for the better young guys will get them more money than they are currently getting. It’s not a complete hose job as those guys are getting more out of this than they were. The union just cares about protecting the top of the scale more than anything else.
It is better than they are currently getting. Minimum guys produce about 25% of the total value in MLB each year and got 4% of the payroll previously. A 20% increase gets them to 4.8% of payroll. That is still about $800M in value earned by guys on the minimum each year going to guys like Correa and Seager.
That's interesting with those numbers by production compared to overall payroll, thanks for that. It's more than 20% raise though- it's 20% raise plus 40 million or 50 or 70 or whatever they end up settling on. I know that's not a ton of money all said and done, but if they get the young guys a 20% raise plus a bonus pool of 5-10% of value earned in that context that's better than they've ever done for the low end guys in the past I would say. Still not enough- and why I flipped my support from pro players to meh when they caved on the one thing that is an issue of fairness in the whole deal, but more than they've ever done in the past.
I mean, if we are down to arguing over 4 million dollars on the apron, 20 milion in total comp and the international draft/draft pick comp we are done and this deal is a winner.
Surprised international draft would be sticking point. Doesn't really change anything for MLB players.
International players have enjoyed being able to sign with whatever team they want. So many of them don't want people from their country to lose that. It's big for mlb small market teams. They can force star international players to go to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc. instead of having a choice where they get to play. The MLB offer isn't based just on standings. They want to create a 4 tier system so basically each tier has a chance at the top guys every 4 years. So every 4 years the smaller market teams like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc get a shot at top international talent. It's another "competitive balance" thing for MLB.
It won’t be. Nobody is losing games or pay over international draft. If they do they are incomprehensibly more stupid than I thought. We are at the point in the deal where we are negotiating over pick swaps and protections 6 years down the line. That might be a threat to kill a deal, but it won’t actually kill a deal.
International draft has always been a non-starter for the PA. Owners can basically agree to this thing and keep mostly all of the current system intact… along with getting expanded playoffs and rule changes. Many here said the owners would have agreed to renew the previous system… but now things like implementing an international draft are becoming a priori?
