The thing about NPR is that they support not only my views or anyone's views but everyone's views, as long as there are facts that support it as well. That is why I like NPR is that they present different sides to issues. Looking at Iraq they've talked to Iraqis that love us there, and those that hate us there, and countless points inbetween. They talk to those view points on almost every issue. They did a feature about a commander that ran her prison differently from the AG scandal, and turned in a soldier that was abusing a prisoner. The whole story portrayed that military prison in a positive light. They show many different sides to all the issues they present.
It's hilarious that you don't even know what the CBC is, but you have no problem proclaiming it as biased as Fox.
Canadian Broadcasting Channel. I get one of their channels on TimeWarner. If you can put up w/ the Canadian slant, they cover world events much better than any US network. Sometimes I watch as a refreshing change to the MJackson trial or a runaway bride. When I lived in Detroit for the 2000 Olympics, CBC was the only way to actually watch. American networks only focused on one athlete at a time so they could build a public interest story around star athletes. Kinda like Terry Schaivo crap. Just focus on one person so sappy people can identify with the story. But I knew several people competing and the American networks wouldn't even mention their names much less comment on them. CBC, like all of their coverages, is much broader. Plus they aren't Democrates or Republicans.
Apparently the networks picked a real winner with this recent woman, she has spent some time in jail for shop-lifting. I was watching Nacy Grace when the story first broke, admitedly for Jacko coverage, and the way she was presented the story makes her look silly in retrospect. She was talking to the pastor of the couple's church and she addresing him as "preacher" in her southern drawl. Like, "we're going to pray for yall preacher". It was hilarious.
How incredibly stupid. I didn't realize millions of unskilled Canadians were pouring into our country illegally every year. You think the minute men were on the Mexican border because they are racist? You think they should have been on the Canadian border? You are clueless.
Why run missing young women stories of whatever race on the national news? I guess for local "news" it is as good as the usual convenience store robbery or family members killing each other with handguns. On the national stations put them on Enterntainment Tonight or some wierd crime show. What is the point? to keep folks from thinking of how we wasted $300 billion in Iraq, killed 100, 000 Iraqis, 2 thousand Americans and did nothing to make our country safer? Keep people's minds off of how they can't afford to send their kids to college, while the weathy bid up the cost of coastal real estate and private colleges cause they got so much in Bush tax breaks.
A large argument the minute-men use for securing the Mexican-US border is that terrorists can come across and bomb us. But terrorists can also come across the Canadian-US border. How come we don't secure that border?
That has to be a joke. First of all, the point is to sell to you "Tide" or a "Ford", second of all do you realize how many people go missing in this country everyday? The only reason a selected few make the news is it becomes good for ratings.
So anyone who wants to limit illegal immigration or English-only classrooms is a racist? I think you are a little too harsh here. I'm a minorty and I support teaching English-only in the classroom and I don't think that makes me a racist. I have plenty of friends who came into the public school system in their early teens with out knowing a lick of English. They all did fine and graduated from college. We are an English-speaking country, and I think it would be a disservice to immigrant children to teach them otherwise. Maybe I'm wrong - but I don't think the race card should be flung at me. Also - just because I want to curb illegal immigration does not make me a racist. Just about every country on the planet (including Mexico) patrols their borders. Is the whole world racist? If we want to expand legal immigration, well, actually, I'm all for that. If you want true, proofable racism - you should look at affirmative action programs. Therein lies the only official algorithmic racism that I can find: asian => not black or brown => we already have too much of you're kind => get the hell out!
I don't think you should use the term black/brown. Us yellow-folk are people too And we do face media-driven racism as well. Remember the 4 Chinese "terrorists" that crossed the Mexican border?
The problem (and the one that I think was being pointed out) is that most people interested in stopping illegal immigration are always concerned about the southern border rather than the northern border, yet many of these people claim to be concerned about immigration in the name of national security. The nat'l security claim is disingenious, especially given the fact that terrorists have crossed the Canadian border and we really only pay attention to the Mexican border.
If the point was to find them, then why are we still hearing about daily...even now. We found her...okay! (I'm watching Ch. 2 local news and they are still talking about it now) So...what were you saying about liberal hatred?
That's a good point. Maybe something like that should be pointed out. The disarrayed state of our southern border does seem to grab the spotlight. Many of the other perceived problems of illegal immigration, however, arguably do stem from the southern border. But that's left to another debate. I just don't like the racist card being thrown around on a whim.
Usually black people come into sympathetic attention when there's documented cases of police brutality. Tyisha Miller, Dialo, etc...
Yes. The only threat our southern boarder poses is that we would run out of people to tend our yards or children, if closed. Excuse my bluntness. I'm simply making a rash statement to illustrate a point. This country is more of a threat from the Canadian boarder. Canada has a relatively relaxed immigration system and people from all over the world are living in Canada. A group could easily go unnoticed in Canada by tapping into an established community. Mexico is relatively homogenious. Outsiders would stick out like a sore thumb. There are many documented attempts of true national security breaches from the North but I don't recall any from the South. To suggest their is no racial element in why the Southern boarder gets so much attention is to be blind of reality. Is it only racist? No. But it plays a large role.
I'm just wondering but can anybody show a missing person's case involving a minority recently that has gotten little coverage? I agree that there may be a pattern of bias but I think a google news search would make the case better if it is shown that there were cases missing minority women at roughly the same time as these other cases but haven't garnered nearly as much attention.
Well for me personally - I am against illegal immigration. If there is a demand for unskilled labor (which I agree there is) - why not just increase legal immigration quotas? It seems like both parties (or at least Bush for the GOP) want more aliens into this country from the border. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/health/223556_immig10.html?source=rss
Well, its hard to give specific examples because providing examples inherently disproves the notion. But you could say stories that make local news but not national news. In the Chron today. Here is a missing Latino baby that I didn't hear about on CNN this morning.
The people that think this Wilbanks chick is good looking...Have they not seen her eyes?? My God - they just bug out and never stop!!
