I agree. About the only time I would be fine with "sex offender" status is if someone was prosecuted at 18 for dating a 16 year old, or something similar.
They could be according to the law but it could be some bogus thing. I read somewhere (maybe on this forum) where some dude was drunk, pissed on the side of a building, and some kids walked by and he got busted. That would suck to have that label on you for the rest of your life over that.
If a 19 yr old guy has sex with a 16 yr old girl, he could be found guilty of statutory rape and classified as a sex offender. How many people here would fall under that category?
his daughter from his first marriage was staying with him on one of his visitation weekends. she was around 6. they were sleeping in the same bed and she woke up and his hand was on her chest while he was sleeping. daughter tells ex about it and she presses charges saying she was molested. i guess they bought that it wasn't just random in his sleep and he was sentenced to jail. now he's on probation, cannot see any of his children even though the daughter wants to see her dad and tells authorities she doesn't believe she was molested. even the ex-wife testified that she no longer believes the daughter was molested, but no one seems to care. he still has to register as a sex offender, wear a tracking device, cannot live with his kids or within a certain number of feet of kids, or go anywhere kids might be until his probation is up. basically, he's a hermit living in a house they have in the hill country until his probation is up in september. a few weeks ago, he had his meeting with his probation officer who asked if he had any contact with his son. he said the only contact was asking for his mom when the son answered the phone. the next day the cops came and hauled him off to jail until september. because it's bull**** he's labeled one. ETA: the original incident happened ~20 years ago.
A final update on this thread... The trial is over and the jury found him guilty... Some small bit of justice for Sabrina's family and friends... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7118584.html
Glad that he was found guilty. Scary how easily this could happen to someone you know. Thanks for the update.
