Really tough call, since I don't think either Stassi or Perez are actually ready. Perez certainly isn't, and this is basically Stassi's first full professional season (knock on wood) in a long time.

So... your guess is as good as mine. I've always thought Corporan was a good candidate to get moved in a deal (like David Carpenter and Brandon Lyon last year) but he is under control for a few more years and seems to work really well with our pitching staff. We may just hang on to him.

At some point though we'll have to find a way to get both Carlos Perez and Max Stassi reps at AAA. If Stassi keeps playing the way he is, Perez may become second fiddle really soon.

George Springer just missed a walk-off homer. He led off the bottom of the 9th with a triple.

Stassi has a legitimate case for a Top 100 prospect spot if the season were to end today. Dude has a .276 BA and over a .860 OPS as a 22 year old C in AA. Great stuff.

Rated Best Defensive Catcher in the Oakland Athletics system after the 2009-2012 seasons. He's backed it up by throwing out 35 percent of would-be base stealers in 2013

rocketpower already posted one report, but almost all reports say that he has good hands and receiving skills. I don't think there's any question about his ability to play the C position in the bigs.

    Fangraphs (in 2011):
He was also ranked Oakland's "Best Defensive Catcher" by Baseball America for 4 years in a row (2009-2012)

Their most recent report on him was this:

Adding Vasquez to that Quad Cities team makes them perhaps the most exciting team in our system.

Correa, Appel, McCullers, Ruiz, Vasquez, Hernandez, Velasquez. Might be the most talented team in the minors.

On Twitter the other night, Morgan Ensberg said the JetHawks were easily the most talented team he had ever seen...someone followed up asking him how many big leaguers were on the roster....he said 10, easily.

But there are no likely stars from Lancaster right now. A bunch of future role players. I don't think there are easily 10, but I'd be surprised if

    West
    Ballew
    Rodgers
    Heineman
    DDJ
    Fontana
    Aplin

didn't all make it to the majors at some point. There are other guys I think have a decent shot. I doubt half of them have meaningful careers. The position players I noted, with the exception of DDJ all have good defensive value at defensive positions. DDJ has the potential to be a good defender at 2B or CF with his natural tools, but speed will definitely carry him to the bigs.

    Monday Stories

    Max Stassi.

    Tri-City in an offensive rut.

    Walk-offs!!!

    OKC with the....

    Recap

    Oklahoma City 4, Iowa 3

By the way, the walk-off wins in the system tonight were rather unconventional. George Springer led off the bottom of the 9th with a triple, and literally one pitch later, won it by scoring on a wild pitch. Oh, the Redhawks got the sweep, too.

The Redhawks laid down 5 sac bunts, according to their announcer, Alex Freedman. 2 of those brought home runs. Cody Clark laid one down in the 2nd to put them on the board first, and Ruben Sosa brought home the tying run with one of his own in the bottom of the 8th. Sosa also hit an RBI single in the 4th which gave OKC a 2-1 lead. Springer was 2-4; his other hit was a double.

Brad Peacock went 7 innings and allowed a run (on a solo homer in the 4th) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Kevin Chapman coughed up the lead in the 8th, as he gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and got 2 outs, one of which was a strikeout. Jason Stoffel allowed a hit and walked 2 over 1 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win.

The Redhawks will welcome Reno to Bricktown for a 4-game set beginning at 7:05. Jake Buchanan will be taking on a rehabbing Trevor Cahill.

San Antonio 4, Corpus Christi 3

This latest one was a 2-run shot (14) in the 3rd that put the Hooks on the board first. He was a perfect 4-4. In the 5th, Jonathan Meyer drew a bases-loaded walk. Preston Tucker and Rene Garcia both went 2-5 with a run scored. Domingo Santana hit a single in the 9th, but Stassi was nailed at the plate to end it. He would've tied the game had he been safe.

Bobby Doran had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 10 hits (2-run homer), walking 2, and fanning 3. Sergio Escalona got the loss as he allowed the go-ahead run on a force out in the 7th. Jonas Dufek struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.

We've got a good matchup in the middle game of this series, as Mike Foltynewicz will take on Keyvius Sampson. First pitch is at 7:05.

    Lancaster was off

They'll host Lake Elsinore for 3 beginning at 7:00 Pacific. Starters TBA.

    Quad Cities 4, Beloit 1

The River Bandits took 2 of 3 and jumped the Snappers in the 2nd-half standings. Remember, top two from each half in both divisions in the Midwest League earns a playoff berth.

Carlos Correa got things started with an RBI groundout in the 1st that scored Teoscar Hernandez. 2 Beloit errors in the 3rd allowed Terrell Joyce and Hernandez to score. And finally, Correa hit an RBI single in the 5th. Hernandez and Joyce both scored twice. Joyce went 2-3.

Colton Cain went 5 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. He's dropped his ERA to 4.12. Dan Minor went 1 2/3 and allowed 4 hits and struck out 3. Jordan Jankowski threw 1 1/3 perfect innings, striking out 2. Juan Minaya didn't ruin Cain's solid outing this time, as he worked around a walk to close it out, his 5th save of the season.

The River Bandits welcome Peoria for 4 games in the Quad Cities beginning at 7:00. In the opener, Lance McCullers will take on Kyle Helisek.

    Connecticut 2, Tri-City 0

The ValleyCats are now on a 27-inning scoreless streak. The last time they scored was in the 9th inning of their 5-3 loss to Vermont on Friday.

They had 9 singles, but nothing to show for it. Chan-Jong Moon and Jack Mayfield both went 2-3.

Chris Cotton allowed a run on 7 hits and struck out 2 in 5 innings. Charles Basford threw 2 scoreless and allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 2. Andrew Walter allowed a run (on his error in the 9th) on a hit and struck out 2.

The ValleyCats offense has stalled. Hopefully when they hit the road, they'll be able to get it going again. They will be in State College for a 3-game series beginning at 7:05 Eastern. Randall Fant and Zach Morton will be on the hill for the opener, and they will face Andrew Pierce.

    Greeneville 4, Burlington 3 in 11 innings

The Appy Astros just keep on winning. This one came in walk-off fashion.

Austin Chrismon had a fine start, as he allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 over 5 shutout innings. Jordan Mills was roughed up in his 4 innings, as he gave up 3 on 4 hits (2-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 2. Troy Scribner, in his Greeneville debut, fanned 2 as he tossed a scoreless 10th, although he allowed a hit and walked 2 (1 intentional). Raul Rivera got the win as he threw a scoreless 11th. He allowed a hit and fanned 2.

Down 2-0 in the 6th, a Tyler White groundout put Greeneville on the board. Tanner Mathis led off the inning with a double. He also walked twice, which gave him 24 walks against 4 strikeouts this season. Thomas Lindauer was 2-5 with an RBI single which tied the game at 2 in the 7th. Burlington pulled back ahead with a run in the 8th, but Juan Santana hit a last-gasp solo homer (2) with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

The winning run came in the form of a walk-off walk in the 11th. Edwin Gomez drew ball 4, which brought home Wallace Gonzalez.

In the middle game of this series, Edison Frias will take on Luis Santos at 7:00 Eastern.

    GCL Astros 6, GCL Yankees2 1

The Kissimmee Stros buried the Yankees' 2nd GCL team with a 6-0 lead, and well, they gave them a consolation run in the 8th.

Ydarqui Marte hit an RBI double in the 2nd and Yonathan Mejia scored on an error in the 3rd. In the 6th, Jake Nottingham hit an RBI single, and they buried the Yankees with 3 in the 7th. Javaris Reynolds hit an RBI single, Mejia hit a sac fly, and a groundout from Jose Fernandez netted them 3 in the inning.

Brian Holmes in his rehab start threw 4 1/3 scoreless, allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 8. Juan Carlos Santos got the final 2 outs of the 5th. Francis Ramirez allowed a run, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 3 innings, and Erick Gonzalez finished it out, despite allowing a hit and walknig 2 in the 9th.

These 2 teams will do it again in Tampa.

DSL Dodgers 10, DSL Astros 3

The Academy was buried by a 6-run 5th.

All 3 of their runs came in the 4th, as Jean Estrella hit an RBI infield single and Alex Melendez hit a 2-run single. Brauly Mejia was 2-4 with a triple and a run scored.

Rayderson Chevalier went 3 1/3 and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (3-run homer), walked 2, and fanned 3. Joselo Pinales was shelled in the 5th, as he gave up 6 runs (well, 3 were inherited) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 (both of his outs in the inning). Cristhopher Santamaria allowed 2 hits and walked 1 in 2/3 of an inning. Juan Delis pitched 2 1/3 scoreless, allowing 2 hits, walking 1, and fanning 4. And finally, Robert Corniel struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.

Anybody have a reason why having 2nd best K/9 in D1 of all draft-eligible players isn't enough alone to get you drafted in the first 40 rounds?

I don't consider myself a scout by any means, but that swing looks promising.

Singleton 21 hrs at CC in 2013
Springer 19 hrs at CC in 2012
What are the odds that Stassi has more homers at CC in 2013 than Springer and more homers than Singleton had in 2012?

50-50? I just don't see him moving to AAA this season unless Corporon is traded.

Doesn't have the velocity or 3rd pitch. Still surprising.

The 3rd pitch is just the difference between a starter and a bullpen arm. With those K/9 #'s he's probably a closer (but that also requires the mental makeup as well--short memory for example).

How many righties out of the bullpen have fastballs in the 80s?

It limits his changeup, and that leaves his curve as his only major league pitch.
