Practices are low level competition compared to real games, if a player can't score or defend in practices and it has become a pattern, he should be staying in the NBDL. Of course, it takes an exception when a sub is frequently pit against starters and is made to look bad.

My question was/is if during practice Novak sucks at defense despite excelling at offense, he is sent to NBDL nonetheless, but what about his defenders who can't stop him from dropping long-range bombs? No problem for them then because it's only a practice or because they are starters?

JVG doesn't do the NBDL, which is why I did not renew my Toros tickets.

I think it's about the total impact one player brings to the game. For example, Ryan Bowen is Ok at defense, but since he can't score in the NBA, he's out. "Can't score" means he is offensively incompetent to the point that his offensive liability outweighs his defense.

I agree with JVG's goal in handling Novak's minutes but not his Zero Minutes approach. I think JVG is doing the right thing by holding a tight rein on Novak. Getting hyped up as a great shooter may make him think he can get by with his shooting. Zero minutes from JVG is a signal of "wake up rookie you ain't $$$$ without playing D". Tough love, but a little bit extreme. I think giving 5 minutes a game to Novak is OK, and make it hard for Novak to earn more minutes.

I was fine with Novak not playing, until the Rockets were just shooting FTs. Novak was a 90%+ FT shooter in college, and TMac was struggling from the line. At that point, hitting our FTs would win the game, even with no defense, so I think JVG could have put him in. I'll defer to his wisdom though, as he knows a lot more about coaching in the NBA than I do.
