Sometimes, I just have to grind my teeth and let it go.

texxx is just being a clown.

Personally, I think the military is a good choice for many of these young evacuees. I understand that recruiting for our volunteer Army and Marine Corps has taken a nose dive, and I want them to succeed, because I'm totally against reinstituting the draft, but it's too soon, in my opinion, to be recruiting when they are still in a state of shock. Most of these people are a few days, a very few days, removed from hell's ground zero. It's just unseemly to be recruiting there now. Those young people will still be in the Dome, in all likelihood, in a couple of weeks. It would have been OK to put a stack of literature on a table for them to look at, because some are probably thinking about joining up, but the recruiters should be kept out. It's just too soon. Our classy military should show some class.

    Keep D&D Civil!!

So, did this recruitment occur today or was it a bogus article?

I am wondering about that too. Actually, it's pretty easy to verify. What do we have here? Abundance of Houstonians! All it takes is to have a few to go Astrodome to see for themselves, or ask around.

    Any volunteers?

I think No Worries needs to go there, since he put out the broken link -- it's mandatory for him. :D

EDIT: the link works now. I spare you No Worries, no worry. :p

Don't mind Khan. He sees things only from the point of view as a private U kid and an employer of those he views as his inferiors. He has gotten carried away with the theological aspects of his econ courses.

In his mind everyone can be a master of the universe and nobody would have to wash clothers, serve food or be a laborer or if they do, it shows they are inferior. He opposes unions or minimum wages even though this would allow these inferiors to perhaps afford a car to drive out of a disaster or ent a hotel room.

Considering this story has yet to appear in any major news source and the blogger writes that it was "forwarded" to him, I seriously doubt its validity.

The same blogger writes that Bush is "censoring" reports from New Orleans.

Not sure the National Guard is really trying to help people by preying on their despair and loss right now. It is right or wrong - well I won't pass moral judgement, but it is opportunistic no matter which side of the fence you are on.

And it's not a job like other jobs. Other jobs don't put your life in jeopardy. This one does - extreme danger where once you sign-up you don't have control of the situations you encounter. Other jobs you can leave when you want and simply not get paid. In the job their recruiting for, you will be put in prision. Serving your country is a great thing, but it's not a job...it's the military.

Frankly, what bothers me is that this is the only option they are being given. Their capitalizing on people desperate for money. If there were other jobs being offered, then theirs choice, and then I think it's fine because theirs options. But when you recruit someone who has just lost everything into the military - there's something that doesn't sit right.

You are jumping to your conclusion (even if it's just "I seriously doubt its validity") too soon.

Has everyone in this thread who thinks this has happened also "jumped to a conclusion" too soon?

This would be a huge deal if it did indeed occur. There is not ONE major news organization that has reported on it, only a blogger who had the information "forwarded" to him.

There are other jobs being offered. Please do research before assuming things. There are newspapers offering free classified postings for jobs for Katrina victims as well as employers going down there looking for people to work. Don't post ignorant things. Thanks in advance.

So if it hasn't been reported by major news media, it's more than likely to be false?

Didn't I say it's easily verifiable if you really want to find out? I don't have any acquaintance in H-town other than these Clutch BBS posters. How about you? You wanna try? We can wage a small bet if you want.

Yes, if a seemingly big news story has not been reported by ONE major news outlet, it is more than likely to be false. Shoot, this hasn't even been reported by MINOR news outlets.

I tend to believe AP, UPI, ABC, NBC, CBS, UPN, FOX, CNN, MSN, etc. before I believe some random blogger who had that information "forwarded" to him.

I would think it is verifiable by the fact that the Houston Chronicle did not report it. Not only that, not one poster has mentioned that they saw this on the 5:00, 6:00 or 10:00 news tonight in Houston.

To be fair, not every little thing is going to be reported by major news sources. If I were running a major news agency, this is not something that I would really mention over all the other stories out there.

I have no idea if it's true, but it doesn't seem like anything the Chronicle would write about if it were.

So, you think that the military making a big push to recruit victims/evacuees of one of the largest national disasters ever is a "little thing"?

The Chronicle writes about the job fair at the Toyota Center. Why wouldn't they (or anyone) write about the military recruiting folks (mostly black)?

Earlier in this thread (I believe it was this thread), there was a post referring to The Onion, but it must have been edited out.

Yeah, but the Onion's current edition has no reference to anything of that sort, from what I can tell.

That's probably why the poster edited it out. :)
