Mike Tyson is one of the most entertaining sports figures ever. What a lot of people don't realize is that the things he says and does are calculated for effect. Originally, Mike had the image of an unstoppable monster, and people were afraid to box him. As a smaller heavyweight, it was an important advantage. After he was beaten a few times, that mystique was lost, so Mike deliberately cultivated an image as an unstable loose canon, a crazy man. He couldn't win big fights anymore, but people still paid money to watch him because they wanted to see what he'd do. Tyson knew he couldn't beat Holyfield, hence the ear-biting. That act was so "crazy" that it scored him a rematch, yet another big payday, even when it was obvious he was no match for Holyfield. When Mike tells opponents "I want to eat your children" he's hyping the match exactly the way a pro wrestler would. He got a tattoo on his face to further his image as the scariest black man in the world, but by then it was all too obvious that he couldn't box at a high level anymore.
