I liked his commentary, even though he sounded like he used to ride the short yellow bus to school.

At least he knew what the hell he was talking about

I thought he was awesome, much better than Murph. He's not afraid to say what he thinks, either.

I wish I could have heard Newlin. He was a very under-rated shooting guard in his day. One of my favorites.

I will give the Shark this much...he calls it like he sees it:

on Cato: "you gotta go up with authority...you cannot get blocked like that when you are 7'0"...you gotta play like a seven footer!"

on Robinson's shot to tie the game: "that hurts...that hurts...I cannot believe he was so open

on EG: "he can flat out ball...and he does it with out all the gestures and running around the court...he does it quietly...he is so cool...gotta love this kid"

Your correct it Reid Getty's did color some while Calvin was out because he and Bill talked a lot about Phi Slamma Jamma. Also Jim Peterson (The Ivory Tower) filled in one game when we played the T-Pups.

Last I heard Mike (or his wife) owned a dessert company. Maybe he was eating desserts while commentating?

I worked for a company that made him some banners at one time...he came in to order them and pick them up... Didn't know who he was at the time, until my boss mentioned it.

this was all pre-rockHEAD days, of course.... you know I would've gotten pictures! haha

Mike Newlin is a whipsmart guy, actually (Rhodes Scholar from BYU). I have not heard him on TV, but his columns were good when he used to write. I love Newlin, the Rockets need to retire his #14. He played eight years for us, and hustled his ass off every game. Terrific player, terrific guy around town.

Hey RH: Where do you work in WF? WHen I come to Houston to get the Kung Pao Tofu, I always try to suss out who you are. No one knows.

I thought he did a great job filling in; seems like a great guy.

Now if I could just figure out what he was trying to do with the telestrator...

He seems like with practice he could really do a great job and it was nice not having Calvin and Bill chat the entire game about the other teams players and how great they are....

I enjoy side bars, but all Bill and Calvin do the entire game is talk about how good the opposing players are....I am so tired of hearing about Baros 50 pt game against us 5 years ago and Eric Piakowski is one of the great shooters in the league and how Lindsay Hunter will light you up if you do not cover him (most players will in the NBA, except a few select)

I loved him, I think he is more basketball oriented then Murph.

He mentioned several times how hard it is to get beat a defense of the dribble, he KNOWS his hoops.

DD, i picked up on that one too. He did say its hard to beat people by dribbling all the time and he was right. It sounded like his nose was stopped up or something. He was very objective though. We still dribble too much and can't defend but we won.

Mike Newlin played for Utah, not BYU. He was a Rhodes Scholar and was was one of the hardest nosed players ever. If there was a loose ball, Newlin would hit the floor without hesitation. He does have some type of speech impediment. It makes him a little hard to listen to, but well worth it for his understanding and knowledge of the game.

One good observation he made was at the beginning of the second half. He noted that the Rockets (basically Francis since he handles the ball so much) were dribbling a lot more than they were in the first half. There was better passing and movement in the first half than the second half. The over-dribbling continued throughout the second half. Now, let me think....which half was the better half for the Rockets?
