It's not really hating. It's just being upset at the situation. Like the Battier trade, mostly everyone likes him as a person and player, but the trade was so lopsided. With the lost chance of Mike James, we're scrapping up 2nd rounders from overseas. I don't believe the Rockets have scouting like the Spurs to grab and develop gems like Parker and Ginobli.
DOn't know if you would also consider this hating, but a few weeks ago JVG was on the radio expressing his doubts that VSpan was NBA ready...
I am not sure how do you reach this conclusion... He never played one NBA game yet. I don't remember any Euro player can have immediate impact from day one... BTW, what's the story with Sura? Feigen seems to suggest that there is a good chance he can come back, if so, that changes the whole landscape -- adding JL3 as 3rd string PG, then the PG position is taken care of. What's left is SG and maybe PF.
Yes but JVG said in that same interview that he had not really actually seen him play. As usual JVG has nothing positive to say about players.
Classic JVG. I haven't actually seen Charlie Ward play but he says his ready so let's give him a multiyear deal.
I too remember hearing there was a difference of opinion between what CD and JVG thought about V Spans readiness for the NBA. I can't see him getting major minutes from JVG when he seemed to think he wasn't ready for the NBA defensively. It is truly sad that we have to discuss this as Plan B.
Anyone heard of Arvydas Macijauskas? I was not suggesting Rox should sign him. Instead, I just want to use him to caustion everyone who thinks the risk of betting on V. Span. Arvydas supposely is more accomplished than V. Span in Europe. He was the key for Lithuania beat USA in Olympics. But look at him now... I am not saying that V.Span definitely will fail but it just it is more a crap shot than sure shot...
I looked at Spanoulis' stats. In Europe they are much stricter in how they record assists, it is generally accepted that to translate Euro League assists to NBA numbers you multiply by 2. Spanoulis averaged 3.1 assists in 27.8 minutes. Rafer averaged 6.7 assists in 38.6 minutes. Now multiply Spanoulis' assists by 2 (because of the difference in how assists are tabbed in Europe) and Spanoulis then averaged 6.2 assists in 27.8 minutes and Rafer again 6.7 assists in 38.6 minutes. Now if you put Rafer's assist rate to 27.8 minutes you get 4.8 assists versus V-Span's 6.2 Or if you put V-Span's assist rate to 38.6 minutes you get 8.6 assists versus Rafer's 6.7 assists. The only bad thing is V-Span's turnover ratio. He averaged 2.6 turnovers per game in 27.8 minutes per game. Since by NBA standards his 3.1 assists would be worth about 6.2 assists, then that means his assist to turnover ration at 6.2 to 2.6 is only about 2.38 to 1 Generally speaking, a true starting NBA PG needs to have a 2.5 to 1 ratio. 3.0 to 1 or higher is considered excellent, which is something Rafer is probably capable of if Yao and T-Mac are healthyyyy. I know Spanouliss stats are in Europe and he had a good team around him, but it does seem like he is definitely a VERY good playmaker and assist guy. Just like Cd said he has to cut down on his turnovers. Also it seems he shot 53.4% from the field, 36.7% from the 3 line and 77.9 percent from the foul line. The 3 point line in Europe is closer (about 22 feet versus the 23 feet 9 inches of the NBA 3 point line). So it looks like Spanoulis is a good shooter (better than Rafer or Sura), and that he's a good 3 point shooter (better than Rafer). His FT shooting is decent and better than Rafer. All in all, looking at the stats, it's just about what CD said, he needs to get better at the 3 (36.7% from 22 feet when NBA is 23-9), he needs to cut down on turnovers, and probably work on D. Although he can steal the ball, getting 1.4 per game in just 27.8 minutes per game. Again it's hard to know how these stats would transfer, BUT at 6-4 200 it looks like he could POSSIBLY I stress POSSIBLY be an upgrade over Rafer at PG and Head at SG and being able to play both those spots. Also in Europe they generally list players in heights without shoes on. Spanoulis is 6-3 1/2 barefoot then, so he's probably closer to 6-5 200 in shoes (just about Sura's size). Either a big PG or a decent sized SG.
Good work RD. Just watching film I was getting, decent assist guy decent at getting steals but probably forces things too much causing turnovers not a pure shooter but not bad. Your stats kind of back that up.
He will rot in Greece just like all of the other foreign projects the Rockets have attempted. Will probably never play a second in a Rockets uniform.
