I'm on a mission. Check out Old Man Rock's post about Anthony Parker. Read the links, especially the one from Draft Express. Hell, we might be able to get Parker and V-Span.

**** Mike James. I think we could be better off with Parker and V-Span, and then use one of the TE's to get a 4/5.

NEVER MIND! The stupid front office of the Rocks spent their time ****ing with Mike James. I think we could have stolen this guy from the Raptors.

    IDIOT ROCKETS BRASS!!!!!!

    ______________

Here was some scoop from the Chron blog of Richard Justice today...

    ______________
The Rockets believed Mike James would be a perfect fit and made no effort to hide their disappointment upon learning he would be signing with the Timberwolves.

''I'm not having a good day,'' Rockets GM Carroll Dawson said Tuesday afternoon.

He didn't seem to be excited about any of his backup options with one possible exception: Vassilis Spanoulis.

The Rockets probably will sign the Greek guard and hope he can play both positions. He's not a great shooter and is just 6-4. So much for the best laid plans.

Okay here's a link of video on VSPAN...

    Vassilis Spanoulis

Nothing new but watch it closely and see if you can see any similarities to another player the Rockets coveted. He reminds me of Mike James... Okay he doesn't have as good a 3 point shot and no NBA experience and it is just one game but he is talented and young and taller and seems to play team ball with no hangups for us and won't ask for all of our mle and he is young and he seems like a winner with intangibles that could help us. THe downside is JVG doesn't seem to enthused by him, but at this point beggars can't be choosy and if Mr. Van Gundy sits him without at least a chance to show his worth I suspect it could be his downfall.

Maybe not signing Mike James is a blessing in disguise.

    exactly, there are some similarities...

Spanoulis plays with heart...he is probably more hard headed then MJ, also he is younger then MJ, Spanoulis likes to make contact when running to the basket...

If we bring him in he will take Alston place right away...

Rafer will be the distributer. V-Span will be the slasher/ driver. JL3 will be the spark plug. All we need is a serviceable 2 if Battier plays the 4.

Just from looking at those highlights, IMHO he is not worth the MLE at this point in his career. He has a slow release on his jumper and marginal quickness and athleticism. He does look like he could be a better defender than most Euro's coming over here though.

But anyways, if we are allegedly in "win-now" mode then what sense does it make to bring in a rookie who will likely take several months to a full season just to get used to living in the States?

As has been mentioned, he won't require the full MLE. He just won't come for the minimum. But, we could give whatever portion of the MLE it requires to get a domestic FA, and then offer the remainder to V-Span on a multi-year deal. I think he's our best remaining FA option, honestly; I think he's going to be good.

From the little I've seen him, I think that's probably the best comparison in the league. He's relatively quick, strong, and pretty much fearless. Doesn't shoot all that well and doesn't distribute all that well, but breaks down defenses. I don't know what kind of rebounder he is.

crash5179 They are both white, thats all I can think of, though I must admit I haven't seen V-SPAN play too much.
About Anthony Parker ,as someone who watch the NBA for 5-6 seosons and watch the Euroleague including him for 7 seasons I must say that there is no other player which is a better fit for the NBA in Europe today. He played in the NBA already but he was young and had no other offensive weapon than pentration.Today Parker is a complete player ,great! fade-away jump shother and I mean great ,he can score over two or three defenders with a fade away 8 times out of 10.
At the preseason games against Toronto and Orlando he proved that he could score those shots with the same efficenty guarded by NBA guys and even used one of those for a winning three over Toronto (and more than 20 points if I remember corectley).
Parker can shot from anywhere anyway with great efficenty(great also from the three point line) He is a rythem shoter who can score 8 baskets in a row and he did that a lot. A good athlete even for the NBA level(jump higher than the average NBA second-guard and from any guard in our bench) ,a Good slasher in europe, a bit weak for the NBA ,but quick enough and today it will be easier for him with the new rules.Great passer can fake a shot and pass beyond the back ,can play the point guard in a small ball type of game. Very modest and always prefer the second star role in his teams. Always does what he is told. The perfect offensive package but an average plus defensive one. An hard worker which will always be the first one to jump for a rebound.

Man we must sign him, every year he got offers from the NBA, the only reason he is not there yet is the fact he perfect his game and shot a three seasons ago and got a one milion point something(almost two I think) contract in Maccabi.
Milwakee ,Cleavlend and Toronto already tried to sign him last year but he wanted to stay because they didnwt offer him enough I think (and he wanted to make history and to win a third championship with Maccabi).

That's my take on him... he is a fearless competitor and we need someone like that on the team... I also I think he is a better distributor and shooter than advertised or at least from all the film I've seen. NOt great but probably better than Alston and I especially love his ability to make space and get his shot off. I do agree it will take him some time to adjust to the team and the NBA but IMO he'll be contributing to the team by midseason if JVG gives him a chance. That's the key will jvg GIVE HIM A CHANCE.

He wont have any playing time under JVG.

    Why bother signing him?

We are looking for cheap JVG-type player ONLY.

Im 100% for V. Span to come to Houston. NBAdraft.net said this about him:

" Strengths: An excellent athlete that shows rapid development in the last couple of years. He is speedy, tough and has very quick reactions. He's got unlimited energy in his game. His leaping ability is impressive. His offensive game is aggressive. He likes to run in the open court and penetrate the paint. His crossover dribble is quick and brakes ankles. His passes are money in the bank; has quick decision making. He runs the offensive sets successfully and delivers the ball to the right person in the right time. He is an excellent defender in the full-court press. He puts great pressure on the ball when defending. "

Im all for a European player that likes to attack the basket rather than jack up 3s all day.

Spanoulis looks like James playing in slow motion against slow-footed defenders. I doubt his defense is anything like Mikey's either. And of course the "kicker" is that he's probably not here this year, if ever.

I remeber the first time I saw this vid earlier this year I was a bit disappointed because I thought he would be quicker (read the "ankle breaker" comments from nbadraft.net, above)....but to me he just didn't look that quick for a guy who will ahve to rely on quickness.

Other than that it's a wash. They're about the same height I guess, and play basketball, and try to score. That's it though.

Why is everyone hating on VSpan? Has anyone seen him play other than the video highlights? It is clear from CD's interview today on 610am, he plans to bring him over and thinks he is NBA ready... :p
