    I totally agree with the position that absolute majority rule is dangerous. That's why all states get two senators. Its also why we have the electoral college.

    I must point out though, that the civil rights movement represented the judgement of a super-majority. Those amendments were not passed by judges. They were amendments that were voted on.

    The voting rights act of 1964 was voted on in Congress, and not popular referendum. Popular opinion was still not in favor of civil rights legislation.

    True, but the passage of the civil rights amendments does suggest that at least when passed, a super majority was in favor of them.

    Just one of the downsides of me being conservative. I have to deal with the Religous right.
