von wafer is a perfect example, has the talent, but has trouble because of his attitude..for every guy like that there's a Bowen, who has less talent, but the perfect attitude..

Ryan Bowen, one of the odd ducks still quacking in the league after a decade. Others come and go, but Flyin' Ryan perseveres, somehow.

didn't he take a couple years off from the NBA while recovering from a hip injury he had during the last year with the Rockets? I think he went to Europe and even got cut there.

Well IMHO there are several things going for Flyin' Ryan Bowen:

    1) Good humble attitude
    2) Hustle
    3) Good size
    4) Always tried out for the teams with lousy depth
    5) (Most important part) He is considered an NBA vet

Most people don't realize it, but coaches and GMs have an unhealthy fascination for NBA vets. I guess its because they think that because player X is already an NBA vet, he won't be high maintenace, he'll be perfectly content to several games without PT, he'll keep his conditioning and you can insert him at any point in the game. Since its highly unlikely the 15th spot will get any PT anyway most coaches probably feel its better to have Flyin' Ryan Bowen rather than someone with a higher upside but is a relatively unknown commodity like Will Conroy, Mike Harris etc.

The story here is size. Ryan made the team because he has good size for the small forward position. Mike is way too undersized for a power forward and he doesn't have the quickness to play the small forward spot. If it was all about talent, Mike would've gotten the roster spot.

LOL, and people say the only reason Ryan Bowen was still in the league was because JVG is coaching. Well, JVG is no longer coaching and Ryan is still in the NBA. JVG wins. :D

Anyways, teams usually go for specialty players like defensive hawks or sharp shooters when filling up the last few spots.

I like this answer. Bowen is no slouch; he'll make you work in practice.

Flyin' Ryan Bowen averaged 9 to 12 minutes for the last three NBA seasons on two teams. I believe he even started some games for the (injury-plagued) Hornets last season.

He signed with Scola's old team. He didn't last the season before they cut him.

I'm guessin' Rybo-Flava, with his skills, hustle and work ethic, easily outdo Harris' skills, hustle, and work ethic.

Ottomaton and StevieFlight3 both hit the mark:
Undefeated Thunder, victorious in glorious battle vs. Sacramento

With that perspective in mind, to reserve a spot or 2 for a 'practice veteran' seems like a smart, unheralded signing for a young, talented team. Kudos to Presti & Brooks.

And kudos to the reporter that asked wtf Flyin' Ryan was doing on the team!
