You do realize the person mostly responsible for developing those guys is Pop right? Also, LMA is terrible and overweight now. Parker/Gasol are extremely old and washed up.

I'd give it to Pops over MDA...
MDA has done a good job in his first year riding the team to a great record... but Pops has built a culture...

But Popovich has averaged a triple double all season, when is the last time that happened?

Well then I guess he can win some kind of player development award....
Not that it isn't important, it clearly is, but am I to give Pop an annual coach of the year award for developing Kawhi, Green, Parker, Ginobli, etc. over many many years?

Again, I love Pop, and I think his 3 coach of the year awards, which ranks him #1 for most all time (tied with Riley and Don Nelson... Phil Jackson only has 1) is pretty fair.

Also, disagree on LMA. He's not terrible. He's not what he was. And he is now 31, which plays into that... but PERHAPS the Spurs aren't maximizing him?? Perhaps Pops isn't doing his best with LMA?? Parker is nearing the end, but not completely washed up. It's a consistency thing with him at his age, and also opponent dependent. Same with Gasol, who is still putting up 20+ PER. Factor in that these are VERY VERY savvy, basketball smart veterans, who even in their washed up state are still better at team defense than much of the league, and those are still great pieces to have for the Spurs. Then David Lee gives them as much in his 18 mpg as any backup in similar minutes in the league. Dedmond is such a perfect fit. Patty Mills shoots 41% from three (better than EG, Lou) and plays his role perfectly, and of course Danny Green, who is the ultimate 3&D type SG. Surrounding a legit MVP candidate.

Again, don't get me wrong, masterful coaching by Pop as usual. Masterful maximization of players (except LMA... jury still out there), masterful implementation of a winning culture over 2+ decades, masterful multi-year development of players like Kawhi, Green, Parker, Mills, etc, etc, etc.

But for this year alone, both MDA and Stevens seem to have done more with less. And in MDA's case, a LOT more with what seemed like a LOT less.

I really don't care the guy is like 70. Brad Stevens will probably win it if he maintains the number one seed out east.

I think spoelstra is in the COY race aswell, what's he's done with that heat team is pretty impressive. I see it as a 4 man race Dantoni, Pop, Stevens (might get it if they nab top seed) and Spo (if they finish 7th seed or higher, he's got a good shot I think).

Pringles is in the mix, not sure if he's front runner anymore, though.

To my last post, this goes to what is the COY award? It's a coach of the year award, not coach of many years award.
I have Pop as the #1 coach all time. What he's done culturally is amazing.

I mean he did start his career 17-47 when he had little talent since DRob was injured... but then Brian Hill started that season 3-15 and that's with DRob for a few games at least. Little know fact - 37 year old Dominique Wilkins was on that team when Pops took over coaching and averaged 18 ppg, 6.5 boards and 2 assists... though was in no way efficient.

Anyway, there's a reason Pop has won 3 COY awards.

The question to me is has Pops down the best coaching job for this particular season. Irregardless of the fact that he developed many of his better players. I mean, he should be up there, but I have a hard time putting him ahead of MDA or Stevens.

People in the conversation = MDA, Stevens, Pop, Kerr, Spoelstra, Brooks and Quin Snyder. That's probably the order I'd rank them if I was a voter.

I get where you're coming from... the thing is that I think Pops achievements within a season can be undervalued - because he does it year in and year out... to be able to 'keep all the balls in the air' and juggle the potential for egos that come with success... and continuously deliver the high caliber teams he does... is miraculous - every year... I've been ready to throw dirt on the Spurs grave for years... but Pops keeps getting the most out of geriatric guys... and plugging in new guys... and seldom seems to miss a step....

Right. Pop did develop much of that talent, but it's talent nonetheless.
Sure, Parker and Manu are shells of their former selves - and for that reason it will be interesting to see how far they get in the playoffs - but a "washed up" guy like Pau Gasol still gives you a 20+ PER, and better scoring, rebounding (meaningfully), assists and blocks than Nene, for example.

But to be fair, they do still seem to "overachieve" record-wise. This team doesn't have the GSW's talent, yet is only 3-4 games behind them.

    D'antonio created a nice system . I don't think he's a particularly good coach tho.

I don't see nuthin' about no Media Conspiracy in this thread's title. Either change the thread title or shut the hell up with your Dan Tony Thread-centric conspiratorial greediness. There's more than enough media conspiracy to go around. We ALL benefit when more people can be made more aware of more media conspiracy.
