Can someone explain to me why it's "our loss" to be turned down by the ASSISTANT coach of a team that just lost to the #8 seed with a fully healthy roster? I don't know if you realize this, but the #8 seed pretty much never beats the #1 seed. Don't you think if this guy was such a great assistant, he could have helped prevent the team with the best record in the NBA and multiple all-stars from getting their asses kicked by a team that almost made the lottery?
would you rather be considered as a great assistant coach with potential on a good team or the head coach on an average team. he might be afraid of becoming another mike woodson lol
It's not good news when even a crappy assistant who got his ass kicked recently turn us down for a faint hope of taking over a Spurs team likely after Popovich retires along with Duncan and Ginobili. If we can't get even crappy coach to show interest, what hope do we have of landing a decent one?
Well I'm already assuming the Rockets aren't looking for a coaching upgrade. That much is obvious. Given that, what I don't get is why anyone would be upset about this assistant taking his name out of the running. Apparently we're accepting a downgrade in coaching - why then does it matter how low we go?
Exactly. A coaching upgrade...or even parity...comes with a cost. The "cost" is a strong ego. IOW, I am the coach...you are the GM. If Rockets' management believes that coaching is only a +/- 5 win proposition...what does it matter who rejects you? You'll sign the next "yes guy".
As a Spurs fan, I don't like Bundenholzer, I hope he leaves and isn't pop's successor, I think he has the basketball knowledge, but he shows no emotion besides that stupid confusing look he always gives, and never gets into his player faces, he does seem like a defensive minded coach, but is really stubborn, and full of himself like pop. I think Mike Brown would be the best choice for Houston, but if Bud leaves to Houston, I hope Brown, and Carlisemo come back to the Spurs, and teach pop again how to run teams.
Can you blame him? The Spurs are a title contending team that will be retooling, not rebuilding, during the next 2 to 3 years. They have Blair, Splitter, Hill & Neal as a core group. They are 1 of the best scouting/drafting teams in the league. IOW, they are a solid franchise and he has a shot at becoming their head coach in the near future. Sure hope he at least does the interview though! On a side note, who is the Spurs' shot caller on their drafting team?
Frankly, I'dve loved that extra five games for this year...and will miss them next year as we likely will lose more games as the coach adjusts to his new team and vice versa.
The "coaching can only get you 5 extra wins" is, I guess, from the interview Morey did with Jonah Keri earlier in the year. I think that particular exchange needs to be clarified, because that's not exactly what he said. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=202094 Keri asked whether, purely based on tactics, a team can jump from 45 to 50 wins. Morey said its tough (it can make the difference between a 35 win team and a 40 win team). But considering the totality of what good coaches like Popovich and Adelman bring, coaching can take you from the 45 win range to the 50 win range. He also said that he thinks as you get higher up on the win curve, the impact coaching has on total season wins becomes more limited. So, how many extra wins coaching can get you depends on the level the team is already at. So a great coach could maybe earn 10 extra wins for a team that is without him at a 35-win level. In my opinion, when considering the impact of coaching, we should also separate out the effects of playing veterans more. A coach can "artificially" boost his win total by limiting the floor time of younger players who need to develop.
