What don't you like about it? The fear is that raising taxes on the rich would force layoffs which would be terrible right now. If you want to decrease the deficit, don't tax the rich, just get rid of, or make more economically sound, the entitlement programs we currently have.
little 3 year olds often fear the bogeyman. doesn't mean its based on any actual facts. i don't want to decrease the deficit. and anyone who really cares that much about the deficit is necessarily myopic. the debt may become a problem, but only much more so by reducing taxes, especially in incredibly inefficient ways like the one you propose. personally, i favor the helicopter money bag drop that krugman might have proposed. it'll do a lot more good than cutting taxes on riches.
To be clear, the "entitlement programs" are funded by payroll taxes, not income, capital gains, dividend, or estate taxes. It pisses me off when rich people or their proxies rail on about "entitlement programs" impacting their tax rates when the taxes that pay for these entitlements are some of the most regressive taxes that exist. When you pay your fair share of payroll taxes, you can complain about the programs they fund. Until then, STFU about them.
It is one big account. You can't claim entitlement programs are funded by a specific type tax. That would be like me saying I pay my groceries with the money I make on Mondays.
The fact that you believe what you just typed is telling. The payroll taxes were specifically enacted to fund specific programs. The Social Security tax funds Social Security. The Medicare tax funds Medicare. If we get rid of those programs, the government would do away with THOSE taxes, not the income, cap. gains, or estate taxes. A more accurate analogy would be if I told my wife that I was going to work a second job so that we could afford to go out to eat more often, then set up a separate bank account (analogous to the Social Security and Medicare trust funds) and set up the second job to direct deposit to the new account, out of which we pay for all dining out expenditures.

The problem is that there are enough cravenly Dem senators who will follow the GOP on this route. The president better call their bluff and lay down the hammer. Frame it as a class issue for crying out loud.
This just seems like an issue gift-wrapped for Dems. The House and Senate should just put the 98% tax cut to a vote this week. Force the GOP to vote on it. If they vote for it - great, issue solved, Dems win. If they vote against it, it's the greatest ad on the planet for the next 6 weeks in all the House and Senate races - "GOP votes against middle class tax cut" or "GOP sacrifices your tax cuts to fight for the wealthy". The campaign just writes itself.

I have faith that Obama will push it. I have no doubt Pelosi would be on board too. My question is the Senate. The Senate GOP has threatened to filibuster. A few Dems (Lieberman, Nelson, and a few others I think) have kind of waffled and said we should extend it for everyone. I'm worried that the Senate is going to cave and just propose an extension of everything. I'm also not convinced this is going to come up for an actual vote, and will instead be punted until after the election. They are only in session for 2-3 weeks, and they all seem to be running scared. The only way this works is for them to put the GOP on the record with a vote.
