Yes, but you'd have to be sort of educated and follow news to know about early voting. And it's much less exciting to dress in red, white, and blue, and wear your "keep guvment out of my medicare!" button early voting than it is on election day. Plus, if you vote early, you don't get your "I Voted" sticker which lets you tell the world how patriotic and awesome you are for voting.
Voting by mail is all we do here in Oregon... got my ballot yesterday. It does take some of the fun out of it and there's no little sticker to give to the kids.
Wow!!! Sestak back from the dead in PA senate race A new poll from PPP (D) shows Democrat Joe Sestak has closed a huge gap in the Pennsylvania Senate race and now runs one point ahead of Republican nominee Pat Toomey. The poll shows Sestak ahead 46-45. Senate races all seem to be tightening up everywhere
Just curious as to what the PPP(D) poll is. Perhaps I'm blanking out (wouldn't be the first time), but what poll is that?
What did he "smoke out?" I read your link and would like a deeper explanation of the "smoking out" comment. Now I don't know much about this poll, but I wasn't attempting to imply that it's bogus. Just tell me what this cat from National Review said that "smokes out" the results of this poll. Maybe I'll agree with you, and maybe not.
It seems independents are the ones skewing the data and trending towards the dems. Very interesting here's more "Toomey held a commanding lead with independents, 50-23," the pollster writes, referring to the August PPP poll. "Sestak has picked up the support of virtually all of the undecided independents and has pulled into a virtual tie with Toomey with that voting group, trailing now only 49-48." <object width="450" height="323"><param name="movie" value="http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/images/TPMlinechart.swf?1287410685"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="false"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="xml=http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/contests/2010-pa-sen/Sestak-Toomey.xml&swf=http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/images/TPMlinechart.swf?1287410685&width=450&height=323&xMin=&xMax=&yMin=9&yMax=61&defaultHiddenCand=&defaultHiddenMode=Internet&defaultHiddenPollster=53:Internet&hideCandidate=&hideModes=&hidePollsters=&grid=false&plots=true&trend=true"></param><embed src="http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/images/TPMlinechart.swf?1287410685" FlashVars="xml=http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/contests/2010-pa-sen/Sestak-Toomey.xml&swf=http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/images/TPMlinechart.swf?1287410685&width=450&height=323&xMin=&xMax=&yMin=9&yMax=61&defaultHiddenCand=&defaultHiddenMode=Internet&defaultHiddenPollster=53:Internet&hideCandidate=&hideModes=&hidePollsters=&grid=false&plots=true&trend=true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="false" allowScriptAccess="always" width="450" height="323"></embed></object>
It's simply not credible to claim there are more self-identified Dems in Pennsylvania now than in Nov 2008, much less two months ago.
PPP is Public Policy Polling. It's a Dem leaning group that does polls across the country. I'd say its not the best in terms of polling quality but its ok.
This about sums it up. To address the National Review point - the sample did have more Dems this time, it seems. That said, the real noteworthy shift came from the independents. But at this point, that poll is only an outlier. Plenty of other polls show the race closing slightly, but Toomey still holding a solid lead. One thing we should never do is overreact to any single poll.
FWIW, a lot of different polls are showing races getting closer all over the place, from PA to IL, KY, CO, WV, etc. That in itself only means that Dems would lose a bunch of close races, but it also means if the turnout wave isn't quite what pollsters are predicting, the Dems could save a whole bunch of seats.
Looks like folks are wising up to republican lies and slander. via TPM -- Univision refuses to air GOP-backed ad telling Latinos not to vote. Kentucky station pulls NRSC ad against Conway for inaccuracy. Aqua Buddha still going strong.
