So that's a "no" to 98% of Americans getting a tax cut. Noted.

Because the alternative is a party that's strong enough to actively vote against your interests.

The Republicans could claim the Democrats are holding us hostage. The only argument the Democrats could make is one regarding deficit reduction. Unfortunately for them, they can't bring up the deficit without bringing up all their spending. I thought the decision to stall was the correct one for them politically.

Unlike the Republicans, who only want a tax break for the top 2% and are willing to let the other 98% suffer if they don't get it, the Dems are very explicit about the fact that they don't want a tax cut for everyone.

Because the alternative is to let a party that has become completely unhinged from reality take the levers of power.

I am not convinced Americans want only 98% to get a tax cut. I realize other polls suggest otherwise. I think its a very hard political issue to poll. The wording would slant everything with terms like "wealthy".

As for "responsible governance"; A responsible government would treat everyone equally. Thus everyone would get the same tax cut. A responsible government wouldn't support our current tax code at all.

Doesn't matter - how do you campaign on procedural rules in the House or Senate?

Dem: We voted to cut taxes on 98% of Americans. My opponent voted against it.

GOPer: I wanted to vote for a tax cut on 100% of Americans, but Dems wouldn't let me!

That's not a winning argument for the GOPer.

This doesn't even make sense. So would a responsible government treat all citizens equally regardless or need or status? If a poor person gets food stamps, a rich one should as well? If a 25 year is allowed to drive, a 5 year old must be allowed also?

I think that plays just fine politically.

REsponsibility would be funding programs, without money that doesn't get done. Letting the tax breaks on the top 2% does help fund programs. It has nothing to do with everyone getting the same tax break.

A responsible government wouldn't single out an economic group (the wealthy) for taxing purposes. The Fair Tax is an example of not singling out an economic group.

A responsible government wouldn't give out food stamps at all. As for the 5 year old driving thing; children are always different, they don't get all the rights adults do.
