Going a step further there is Office Communicator for Mac, too. I wonder if this purchase may have any impact on the feature set in Lync, which replaces OC.
Ah, beat me to it, but yep, I'm curious, too. If it is implemented in Lync it could very interesting regarding functionality in the Enterprise.
man that's a lotta dough for a money losing company that was valued at $2.1b in 2007 (when owned by ebay) and $2.7b in 2009 (when they sold off 65%) and has been around forever in tech years. They must have some grand plans to integrate it with mobile somehow...I'll never really 'get' tech valuations....wish I had something to sell .
Something I discovered last night using Skype on my EVO. I use Skype for voice chats using the phone when I am at home and using WiFi. One of the terms of using Skype in the U.S. is that you cannot make voice calls over the mobile network, you can only use it on WiFi, otherwise it is just basically a text-chat program while on mobile-only. If that makes sense. But last night, just on a hunch, I left my phone on the mobile only, did not turn the WiFi on, and asked someone to call me on Skype. It rang, I answered, and the call went through just fine. Now I could not completely guarantee that maybe the phone wasn't going ahead and grabbing the wifi for this anyway somehow, even though I had not turned it on, so I tested it again today at work, where I definitely do not have a wifi connection. Again, the call worked just fine. Now maybe I am the last person around to realize this, in which case, DUH. However, if anyone would get any use out of this, then great. Again, confirmed, you cannot SEND a Skype call from your Android device using Skype when only on a mobile network, but you definitely CAN RECEIVE a call. Just thought I would pass this along in case anyone might find it useful.
I don't care what the numbers might say, I don't think Skype has the footing to be the video conferencing/call solution that everyone goes to. No way is its user base that cemented to Skype. And I can totally see Microsoft driving it in the wrong direction.
QFT. Any change could completely alienate the base... there are options (albeit none I prefer for now), and I suspect people are contemplating even more now. I see references to "hoping to integrate with Outlook" and "Increase their windows user base" and think.... well there goes another good thing, as I want nothing to do with either of those things and like Skype as it is. Lastly, they paid what, 8 billion for a company that is losing money? I find it hard to imagine them keeping it as is. At this point my hope is that they don't make it less useful/tolerable, for me or the people with which I use skype to communicate.
Well, not only that, but today I also tried SENDING a call, which I had not done, and lo and behold, the call goes out as well. So, with whatever changes they made in their recent update, also apparently came the ability to send and receive over the wireless network instead of just wifi. If they made any announcement about that, I missed it. Anyway, not going to complain about it!
