Yes, his passing and rebounding are pretty bad. I never said otherwise. I'd like to point out that I'm a Rockets fan, pal. Cut it out with the demeaning sarcasm and grow up. The fact is, I've seen Redd play much, much more than you.
That's the first thing that came to my mind as well. Although, I think the Bucks problems stem more from the lack of a point guard bringing the wrong mentality to that team. Passing is contagious, and so is hogging the ball. He averaged 3 assists per last season which is ok for a shooting guard.
Case in point: if you check the current stats on the Bucks on 82games.com, you'll notice that Brian Skinner is the ONLY player who has allowed less points than he's scored. That means that by 82games.com standards, Ruben Patterson and Dan Gadzuric are sub-par defenders. Time to stop worshipping 82games.com. Redd's supposed horrid defense is a TEAM problem. It's not just him.
So you agree that he's a terrible passer and rebounder, and that he's just an OK defender. If you would have just agreed with me that he's overrated, we would have saved ourselves a lot of trouble. I didn't say you weren't a Rockets fan, just that you should move to Houston. At least get League Pass, so you don't have watch The Bucks so much.
I'll keep this short and to the point, you're wrong. if you've ever watched him play, and know anything about basketball, you'd know that redd is a freak. peja...is one dimensional. redd is much more than a shooter, and he's an amazing shooter at that -- if he was smart and went to the cavs, lebron and him would be murdering the east right now.
Let's see, other 82games tidbits... If you check last year's stats so that you actually get a fair sample size, you'll see that Redd's +/- is better than Gilbert Arenas. http://www.82games.com/0506/0506WAS.HTM http://www.82games.com/0506/0506MIL.HTM So Gilbert Arenas ain't a franchise player?
Being able to score off the jumper and the drive, whether it's off passes or creating his own shot, and being able to play pretty decent defense is all I need out of my shooting guard, frankly. I don't expect my top scoring guard to get a ton of rebounds, and if he's one of the top 5 scorers in the league, I'm hardly mad at him for not passing much. I don't agree that he's one-dimensional, I think he's maximizing his talents the way he plays.
I think Redd is needed to score so much for the Bucks that it's hurting his overall game. I've only watched him in highlights but know that it would be the problem for any that is the primary scorer. T-Mac went through it, Kobe went through it and I consider them better players then Redd. Lebron is fortunate that he has a good team around him. Redd might have gotten the max contract but he's not a franchise player you build a team around and expect to go far in the playoffs. What I'm wondering is what's up with Bogut, haven't heard much about him.
I still don't know why Milwaukee traded Joe Smith for Steve Blake (Go Terps!). Smith's expiring cap friendly contract would have been a very nice trading piece come deadline time. They have the chance of being Major Free Agent players this off season. They also have Redd, Simmons, Bogut, Villanueva, and Gadzuric locked up long-term, Gad being the only somewhat stupid contract. Whether or not Redd is overrated or underrated depends on who you talk to. He doesn't have PG skills like T-Mac, but one shouldn't hold that against him. And it's unfair to put T-Mac's good game vs Mil. on Redd considering T-Mac was destroying Babysitter Raper in the post, and getting a lot of shots off screens. I think Milwaukee is perennially underachieving, ever since the big 3 days of Big Glenn, Sam, and Ray Allen, then came Timmy...they've always had talent, and George Karl couldn't even get them to win big. I think their current coach Stotts is on the hot seat. They probably miss Bobby Simmons a lot, but their Team Defensive fundamentals are broken. Jeff Van Gundy did the color analysis during the Mil. vs. Det. series last year. He said that Milwaukee was playing very well and should be winning, but their spacing is flawed which leads to Detroit fast breaks, which was the ONLY reason Detroit was winning that specific game....So personally, I think their coaching is not up to level. One might disagree with Van Gudy's philosophy here and there, but knowledgeable fans don't ever question his basketball knowledge. Stotts might have a bball IQ problem. And one must also consider that their team has offensively played like crap too, outside of Redd and Villanueva. Their backup PG had a great game vs the Rockets, but before that, was shooting 10% from the field. So, I really don't know if Redd's a star or not. Other "Stars" have glaring flaws in their games too. But Redd can be a big part of a winning Bucks team...I believe he does more good than bad...and I don't think he's alone responsible for their losing problem.
How the hell is Michael Redd overrated? He was a 2nd rounder that turned into a their franchise player! All those teams passed him up in the first round. So for being a 2nd round pick, he's done quite well for himself in his career. Any player who gets selected in the 2nd round, and ends up being an all-star is in no way overrated.
Wow, he's gone from "not a standout, but certainly not a sieve" to "pretty decent" A few more posts, and I'm sure that he'll be Kobe Bryant. I expect him to get more than three per game. Yeah, because high scoring guards never really pass that much...well, except for Kobe, Iverson, Arenas, Wade, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, McGrady... So, it's OK that he can't pass, can't rebound, and plays somewhere between OK and decent defense, just as long as he can score. You seem to have pretty low expectations for your franchise players. Yeah, while he's minimizing the Bucks win total.
"Not a sieve" is equivalent to "pretty decent," wouldn't you say? I don't expect him to get more than three per game as a guard. Guess we just have different standards. I never said high-scoring guards never pass. Never said that. Those guys are exceptional players. You don't have to be Gilbert Arenas to be a franchise guard. Speaking of which, you still haven't addressed the fact that Redd's +/- compares rather favorably to Arenas'... Not to mention that Redd is a better jumpshooter than every single one of those guys, so I'd WANT him to pass less. And you need a good TEAM to win games. Redd has been one of the few bright spots for an underachieving TEAM. I guess when McGrady's TEAM went 21-61, that meant he was a horrible player? I guess the fact that he's never seen the 2nd round means he's not clutch?
Woah dude, slow your roll. I'll start by saying I *hate* the Bucks, but I respect Redd's game a lot. You're arguing he doesn't do anything but score. I completely agree. What Drexlerfan22 is saying is that he is much more than just a jump-shooter and that most non-Bucks fan don't realize that. I also completely agree. There shouldn't be any argument here. Redd has a VERY complete offensive game. He has a great jumper, with one of the fastest releases. He has good athleticism. Can drive in either direction and take it to the rack. He moves well without the ball off screens and curls. He can perform acrobatic finishes with either hand around the hole. However, he doesn't defend well, and he doesn't make a very good playmaker. Is he a franchise level player? Yes, obviously he is now. Should he be a franchise player? Obviously not. There's a reason why the Bucks did so poorly these past few seasons. In other words, if you're a Bucks fan, you probably overrate Redd. If you're not, you're probably underrating him. Very few people see him for who he actually is.
Whoops. But man point stands. What the heck were those trades? 2 huge expiring contracts for big men and they end up with babysitter raper and blake and skinner? Patterson is only playing big minutes because Simmons is injured...I guess I understand that move to add a 3'rd man into the 2/3 rotation. But Magloire's expiring is a huge trading chip. He's been a legit big man and all-star. I just don't get Blake and Skinner. Once Simmons comes back, there won't be any time in their rotation for Blake. They have Mo and Bell sharing the PG, Redd, Raper, and Simmons manning the SG/SF, and Villa, Bogut, Gadz, and Skinner manning the PF/C. They should have held onto at least Magloire's to see if they could get something big at the deadline, draft picks or something.
This is one weird thread. Who exactly overrates Michael Redd? He's an incredible offensive player on the most obscure team in the NBA. He is NOT one dimensional at all. Just watch him play a couple of games. One thing that impresses me about him is that he isn't hypnotized by his sweet jumpshot. He can go either way and finish with either hand. Also keep in mind Redd has improved since signing his max contract. If he weren't on the Bucks they would be terrible. If he were on the Lakers or Knicks he would be hyped out of this world; but he plays for the BUCKS! I don't get this thread at all.
You agree that he doesn't do anything but score, but you respect his game a lot? The "game" involves a lot more than scoring. Redd is a great scorer, he's just not a great player. Great players put forth maximum effort on both ends of the floor. Great players know that they can't win a game by themselves. Great players lead their team to victory. Great players know that a balanced attack is the key to success. Here's another stat. In the Bucks first three games, Bogut and Villanueva averaged a combined 37 ppg. The Bucks went 2-1. In their recent four game losing streak, Bogut and Villanueva have averaged 21 ppg combined. That's no accident. We'll just have to check back later in the season to see if this trend continues...
I don't get this post either. Redd is a complete offensive player. MPG - 39.9 FG% - .521 3p% - .471 FT% - .922 RPG - 3.0 APG - 1.9 SPG - 1.4 TO - 1.7 PPG - 32.4 A-Train, your fixated on franchise guards who basically play 2-3 position players (PG, SG, SF). That's what Arenas, Kobe, Tmac players do. I would go to say that Redd is a very good traditional Shooting Guard. Should he be a franchise player? Maybe not, but he is their best player so be default he is the franchise. Basically any good guard that can shoot over 50% from FG, 47% from 3's, 92% FT and score over 30 points a game can't be overrated. I don't exactly see how he has a negative impact on his team unless the opposing SG outscores him.
