mar1juana is from mother nature. Its just a plant. Not something man made like alcohol or added chemicals like tobacco, pain pills or cocaine. It just so happens that when you light it on fire and inhale the smoke, you start to feel funny.
Dude, I'm saying people make their own choices, and all folks capabable of making their own decisions can do whatever the heck they want, good or bad. It doesn't make what they do "right", but you and I still can't stop them from doing it. We can only punish to dissuade....
Getting his picture taking while hitting a big bong -- that is just classic. When will these athletes learn ?
Last response on the subject of rights, because this is supposed to be a thread where we laugh at Phelps' misfortunes, not have a philosophical discussion. mar1juana occurs naturally. But, I don't think that means Nature guarantees or owes it to us, as the definition you quoted implies. If the plant were to go extinct, what would happen to our alleged right to smoke it? I understand what you're getting at. Phelps can do as he likes, subject to the repercussions of his actions. I'm just a curmudgeonly old man who doesn't like to see the word "right" thrown around like everything is an entitlement.
The International swimming organization accepts Phelps apology. http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/9179226/FINA-praises-Phelps'-apology-for-mar1juana-photo?MSNHPHMA LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) - Swimming's governing body praised Olympic champion Michael Phelps on Wednesday for his public apology after being photographed inhaling from a mar1juana pipe. "As a citizen, Michael Phelps displayed inappropriate behavior," FINA said in a statement. "But his sincere regret and the promise that such a situation will not happen again are sufficient guarantees that this great star will continue generating respect and appreciation to all fans of our sport around the globe." The 23-year-old Phelps apologized to fans and sponsors earlier this week after British tabloid News of the World published a picture taken during a November house party in the United States that appeared to show the swimmer smoking drugs. Swimwear company Speedo and several of Phelps' other sponsors have said they also accept his apology and would stand by him. Phelps won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics last year.
I'm not sure what the law is in South Carolina, but I'm pretty sure they don't have enough evidence to convict him of anything. Water Pipes in themselves are not illegal. From that pic, you can't tell what he's smoking. It was months ago, so testing him will get you nothing. What do they have to base a conviction on? The answer is a big fat nada.
I don't know who you're talking about but it's always the case. When it's some ball player with tats and listens to hip hop or even little ray ray down the street getting caught smoking weed they're just "thug idiots". Now that it's our good american swimming olympic hero, we're crying for everyone to leave him alone. He's just being youthul, breaking the law and such.
I was talking about Michael Vick(before the dogfighting) on the Falcons MB. On the Falcons MB when this pic came up. When that pic came up on the Falcons MB a lot of people called him a thug, and when the water bottle thing happened people called him a thug. Even though in the pic it looks like it is a black and mild in his hand, either way it was a debate about it. Now on that same MB when this Michael Phelps discussion came up those same people said Phelps is young or it is just weed. Funny how things changed. One guy even went so far to say well Vick looked and presented himself as a thug while Phelps didn't appear, even though he had a DUI prior to the incident.
So you can get high and compete later? I thought drug use was banned period. Is it only banned say, during a certain timeframe before or after competition? For example, Josh Howard didn't lose any PT for saying he got high on occassion, since he never tested positive. However, he got the business for admitting to drug use...was called an idiot...a thug, etc...
No one was exactly "competing" with Phelps before. You want a good idea of how many people smoke pot? Every convenience store I've ever been in has had enough demand to stock SEVERAL kinds of rolling papers. That's a lot of joints to warrant four or five boxes of papers behind every counter in America.
the olympic peeps said it was because he wasn't competing. not sure about the josh howard thing even though wasn't he doing some other stuff around that time that could've caused those opinions? i seem to remember a video that was going around. regardless, imo, if you smoke dope, you're only an idiot if you're doing it when you know getting caught doing it would get you in trouble (outside of the actual act being illegal). like when you're going to be tested, you're in your car driving down the road, etc. i partake on a nearly daily basis, so i don't think anyone's a thug simply for doing that. not micheal phelps, not josh howard, not anyone.
Add all the boxes of Swisher Sweet and Phillies Cigarillos to that too. I'm sure people LOVE smoking those cigars as is... Ooooh a Grape Cigar!!
I dug up the Chalmers/Arthur thread, to compare: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=153516&highlight=weed
So the bottom line is this: 1. You can smoke weed and get a DUI and everything will be "A" OK as long as your White. Could you imagine if Lebron James got caught in a pic smoking weed? Reactions would be A WHOLE LOT different.
