I saw the preview last night at the Angelika in Houston for free. Great flick. Michael Moore lets it all hang out. Lot's of stuff about how we were stiffed and our congress folks were deceived and railroaded into giving Goldman and the boys $700 billion.

I also found it very interesting the various Catholic priests and bishops he had on who denounced the greed of capitalism and described it as a sin. Interesting stuff.

Lots of incredible vintage clips of FDR and other historic events. Quite entertaining in a sad sort of way. I suppose conservatives and contented moderates will take issue with it.

glynch, they'll take issue with it b/c MM does distort things (I would argue a 5-10% effect, others can argue more than that) to help simplify and tell his biased story.

I really want to love and enjoy his work, and I really like his sense of humor, but me pimping for Moore would be inconsistent with my rants against some other notable media types who distort to help tell a story.

If he was just a little more disciplined with the storytelling and use of facts, he could find himself not preaching to the choir so much. That's just my humble opinion, as someone who hasn't given up on respect and dialogue (silly boy that I am.)

Very similar topic to a thread that was discussed here in the D&D a couple weeks back.

Catholic priests denounced greed? I'm glad that he got that on film or I wouldn't have believed it.

The greed of capitalism is much worse than the other kind of greeds. I'm glad that was finally addressed.

Did he get their take on stealing too? Somehow I doubt that... I also doubt he stated the church's official stand on socialism, homosexuality, sex out of marriage, abortion etc etc.

Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies, The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
    -- C.S. Lewis

    His movies are not documentaries!!!!

Sorry. I had to say before we all hear it 10,000 times over the next 4 months. We only like propaganda and sorta-truths from our politicians and big business. Not from Hollywood!

All joking aside, I will probably go catch this during the day unless my girlfriend is interested and then it will be a weekend thing. It just doesn't seem like a great date movie :D

CS Lewis was largely a moron, but he pegged the robber baron thing (half of that quotation.) We live under robber barons. The part he got wrong was the comparison, and suggesting that the cruelty of robber barons takes a break. No evidence for that in recorded history.

It seems like each film and book Moore comes up with he seems to move more and more to the center and become more and more populist. From what I've heard, he is brutally critical of senior Congressional Dems for their role in the 700 Billion Dollar Heist. He may take liberty with some ambiguous facts, but the man's message is undeniably true.

26 posts and you're already diving into the D&D? My advice is to stay out of here for a while and enjoy the less combative parts of the BBS. I think that the majority of us here may just be masochists.

I think he distorts things by far more than 10 percent. He did meet Roger Smith. Did NOT get a gun from a bank. Canadians lock their doors. The NRA "hicks" he hates so much are not responsible for high U.S. gun homicide rates. Inner city violence is the main culprit.

He's also a multi-millionaire he has made a lot of money on the FREE MARKET where people buy and sell extremely biased "documentaries.
    "
I don't know if state-funded bank bailouts can really be defined as "capitalism".

Moore lost any semblance of objectivity a long time ago. I don't know if he ever had any. He is making a lot of $$ from preaching to the choir. A skeptic who hates capitalism may even say he is exploiting his legions of fans to accrue money and expand his already large bank accounts.

For all of you accuse Rush, Hannity, etc. of extreme bias (and rightly so!) - you have to admit the left has their share too.

It's sad to me that the Church (i mean the Church, universal -- not any particular denomination or flavor) has so stopped preaching the Gospel that you were surprised by this or found it noteworthy.

Mmm, got any proof of that? (bank gun, etc)

I disagree entirely, his sense of objectivity has gotten WAY stronger as his works have progressed.

For all this crowing about Moore being rich, I've yet to see the proof. The only evidence I've seen is when I asked him in person about how much money he had made off of BFC and SWM back in 2003 and he told me "The negotiation for production basically left me with enough to call myself 'middle class' for a couple years when it was said and done." Even still, faulting Moore for being rich is stupid, the guy makes a product that is wildly popular and people give him money for it... so what? What is wrong with that? There is a difference between being wealthy and being greedy.

It doesn't really sound to me like you don't know anything about him, honestly.

I would never have thought that C.S. Lewis would put forward such a scathing indictment of the Judeo-Christian God!

I know, right? Dude should really have stuck to children's fiction (at which he was very good), and his fans should stick to his children's fiction.

If you want philosophy, theology, or political philosophy, there are much better authorities and texts, no?

I really do like a alot of his movies. I think the guy is a loudmouth, and he is a bit annoying, but he does scream a lot of truth. It bugs me that soo many people attack him and not his arguements, on both sides. I love that the guy who did Supersize Me doesn't get half the crap Moore does, and yet his piece/his TV show is as hyperbolic if not moreso than Moore. Come on, liver failure after a month? Or the guy who did steroids and his sperm count dropped to like it's 1% of its original value in 2 weeks? Obviously the facts were played with, but the message is still clear. If you argue with someone that McDonald's is bad for you, or steriods are bad they take it as a matter of fact and will tend to agree with you no matter how you present your argument. However, when Moore does outlandish crap like taking people to Cuba to get healtcare he's an idiot, go figure.
