Yeah, it's also great that they retire MJ as their first jersey ever, but no Alonzo.

    That's just stupid.

Even though Alonzo might come back.......but still.

Miami might be the only city that gives less of a rat's ass about their NBA team than Houston. If I were a Heat fan, I'd be seriously pissed off...

FWIW, I can't make the comparison to Gretzsy's (sp?) number being retired by the NHL since I don't follow hockey at all, but I don't think what MJ did in the NBA compares to what Jackie Robinson did for MLB, therefore, I don't think the NBA as a whole should retire #23. Another individual team all by itself retiring MJ's number is just stupid.

So, I will somebody have to write "and Michael Jordan" on Calvin Murphy's jersey in magic marker, or just take it down and replace it with Jordan's? :)

Wow - that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Some fans should take that down and burn it.

By the way, Gretzky had a much larger impact on hockey than Jordan had on the NBA (without the marketing machine)and deserved to have the number 99 retired.

    Why?

    1. Starting in his ROOKIE year, he had 9 straight MVP awards.
    2. He had the more goals(10% more) and assists(40% more) than any player in history. In NBA terms, that would be about 44,000 points and 25,000 assists.
    3. 4 Stanley Cups
    4. A record 24 game winning goals - yes, he was just as clutch if not more than Jordan.

Oh, and no one complained when the league retired his number.

And i would like to add a few other aspects...Beyond the numbers, where Gretzky's assault on the record books makes MJ look like just another player..( in fact, the only guy in the modern era who has remotely done to the record books what 99 did to the hockey records is Jerry Rice's wr record destructio )...but Gretzky was far, far more to Hockey than Mj was to basketball. MJ has always been about hree things; ability, winning, and making money. That's is...he has given very little of his time to anything which didn't serve these three purposes, aside from the odd gambling/extra marital fling. He has never been a role model for any reason other than being highly skilled, and highly competitive.

Wayne Gretzky, on the other hand, has lieved and breather hockey for most of his adult life; has given years to the Canadian National program, most recently as the GM of the Gold winning Canadian team; a thankless and exhausting job. He has been an ambassador for the sport in word, namje, and action where Mj was only in name...And unlike Jordan he did the majority of this without the benefit of a Sternish pr campaign, or the spotlight of a major market, but in the wintry climes of Edmonton, Alberta...His relocation to the US single-handedly opened entirely new markets, and lead directly to several new teams. And throughout this entireely long, and glorious career, with a dominance virtually unparalled in team sports, he has been a class act every step of the way.

Michael Jordan may have been more well known, but there is no comparison in terms of who was bigger for the game. Jordan was a great player, a dynamic and exciting player...some say the best basketball player ever, although I'd disagree...Wayne Gretzky was hockey.

quit posting...MJ probably got you watching Basketball in the first place.

He did more for the game than any Rocket, Laker, Sixer, Celtic, or any player from any of the teams in the L. go watch the astros or just stick your head back in the sand. You obviously are so out of touch with reality.

Earth to moron this is earth!:p
