Irvin must be on the powder again. On the topic of the analysts, Shannon Sharpe is a Bronco homer, but it least he picks on some guys and calls them out. Boomer and Marino are boring. When NFL Today has Jim Nantz, Deion Sanders, Marino and Boomer. Deion is better than Shannon, IMO. FOX NFL Sunday is brutal to watch, Terry Bradshaw doesnt even make sense. The show NBC has going is pretty good, watching Sterling Sharpe and Bettis get after each other, it's good. Costas and Collinsworth are decent too.
I agree that it would be a bigger deal, but let's be honest, saying a group of people is stupid is a lot more insulting than saying a group of people is unathletic. and that's not the only reason that people would make a bigger deal. and its dishonest to ignore the reasons for the double standard.
But it all has to do with the same thing, "STEREOTYPING" saying a white is unathletic is the same thing in many ways as saying an african american QB is not as smart in the huddle or with plays as a white one" I believe it was Limbaugh or whoever that said something about McNabb being the QB and stuff that was taken as a HUGE deal. I just think they have some simliarities and they all are stereotypes. It doesn't have to be that they are not smart or whatever...just any stereotype in general.
but again you ignore the context. to say black people aren't as smart has a lot more negative impact than saying white people aren't athletic. the sterotype against black people damages them when looking for jobs, when trying to get a loan, etc. that's why its a bigger deal, because its a larger context. it goes beyond football where as the stereotype against whites stays in the world of athletics, which has little impact on the average person.
I understand your point. I agree with you but at the same time i still believe it's a double standard. Regardless of the context and how bad it seems it's still wrong. Im sure there are other ways that this could be reversed, not using the "smart vs dumb" Debate.
Maybe, maybe no. When they are looking for jobs, there are concrete factors. GPA, strength of school, test scores, experience. When they are trying to get a loan, credit score. There are other racial stereotypes. Asians, both men and women are seen as more sexually feminine. Blacks, both men and women are seen as more sexually masculine. That works against both races in a way that concrete factors cannot overrule. Basically, I abhor the double standard and reject any justification of it's existence.
More or less insulting, it's still insulting, so neither should be done. ...and the reasons for the double standard are...??? One race was wronged by the other, which will never be forgiven. White people seem to believe that we should accept any crap slung our way since our long dead ancestors had too much farming to do, and went about it the wrong way. I understand "the reasons", but don't accept any malice directed at my race because of a previous generations actions.
One of the funniest things I've ever seen was the cover of Texas Monthly about 10 years ago (after Michael Irvin was busted for coke) and they had a photo of him on the cover with white stuff below his nose with the caption "Hey Mike, where'd you get your mustache?" a la the old milk commercials. Phenomenonal!
"Look at JJ ARRINGTON... taking it to the house... JJ is 'MOVIN' ON UP!" - Shannon Sharpe "Uh, you mean he's dyno-mite?" - someone in the studio, either JB or Dan Marino "HE's MOVIN' ON UP AND dyno-mite!!" - Shannon Sharpe I bet if some white dude said that, Quanell X 'd be all over his *ss... Did anyone else besides me catch that this past weekend right after the TEXANS' game?
Dude was crucified for telling the truth about American History. Guess when a black dude like Irvin tells it, it's okay. RIP Jimmy. You didn't speak greek.
it wasn't american history, it was how he tried to link it to today. I actually never thought what he said about slavery was that bad, because there is some truth to what he said. there were slave owners who tried to get certain men and women to have kids. but to use a word like "breed" and then to say that is why blacks are good athletes is where he lost it. and he was being serious. but I do agree what he and irvin said were equally ridiculous.
