yeah, you're right. that's why i think they would do far better by finding a way to stick in miami, even if they have to share more of the load on the ballpark than they'd like.

they can get some beautiful new ballpark...like PNC...in a tiny market...and it still won't help them improve revenues. particularly when each team cuts its own local media deal. i would think the media revenues from a city like Miami would FAR exceed the best case scenario in San Antonio...or Vegas...or Portland.

of course, all of that could be fixed with substantial revenue sharing and/or some sort of cap.

i think it could work as an NFL market tons better than it could as an MLB market.

If you add Austin to the San Antonio market, how does that affect it in comparison to markets like Pittsburgh, Kansas City, etc.?

good question. i'm not sure. but austin isn't part of san antonio's media market which advertising dollars are based from.

It would be nice for San Antonio to get a team, but hell no. We cannot have a team with a couple of WS championships moving into Texas to give a city bragging rights, even if they don't count.

But that's Municipal population your talking about. In this breakdown, there only referring to population inside city limits.

In terms of Metro Area population, which counts suburbs and incorporated towns, San Antoino isnt even in the top 25. San Antonio is 29th largest in area population.

    The same goes for Houston.

Municipal pop: 4th largest in US
Metro Area pop: 10th largest in US

Ah, it's great being a Marlins fan

Would the Astros fight or support them moving to SA? Pretty much the entire state bar the metroplex is Astros territory, so I don't know if they'd want another team cutting into their market.

San Antonio doesn't support AA baseball. What makes anyone think they would support a MLB team? I know it's different, but SA is not a baseball town, period.

I, for one, would hate this. I live in Austin and love the fact that I still get 95% of the Astros games on tv. A team in SA would certainly ruin that, as it has with the Rockets.

Move them to the Carolinas, Norfolk, or Vegas. Stay the hell out of Texas.

because its mlb and not minor league. not saying it would work, but i think anyone would be more excited about a major league team than minor league.

agreed. you can't look at minor league attendance in any sport and extrapolate out to say that it wouldn't be supported on the major league level.

having said that...i still don't think it makes for a good MLB market. i think Miami is a far better alternative.

I agree with that. Plus, I like NFL football better than baseball.

If I were SA, I'd wait out the Saints situation rather than try to get into bed with MLB (especially since, as slow as baseball works, it'll probably take a decade to get the Marlin move approved).

Yep. As far as physical size, I'm sure SA and Houston are huge. But, they try to annex everything around them.

SA isn't very densely populated. I think it's three or four times the size of austin, as far as land.

I thought grande was based in San Marcos?

I think that would be the largest metro area, as far as square miles in the country. I would hate it. I want nothing to do with SA.

The Marlins should move to Hampton Roads. I was there not too long ago and I really think it could work. There are so many decent sized towns there bunched together like Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Cheasapeake, and Tidewater. It's a cool area with a young demographic.

The Mets' farm club in Tidewater gets quite alot of support. I am sure a MLB team drawing fans from the entire eastern VA region would succeed.

    How about northern New Jersey?

The only other markets I can think of is Portland, Nashville, and that's about it.

Of course Vegas. Imagine, a weekend series vs the Vegas franchise.

Get rid of the Marlins AND the Devil Rays. Nobody wants them, and nobody really cares about them...
