LOL Haven, I think you're a little detached from the issue. I've never heard anyone call our borders an imaginary line. That is great. What is American sovereignty? A fairy tale? After you're done creating a Chinese middle class why don't you go down to Mexico and help them create a bigger middle class. The key to illegal immigration is the word ILLEGAL. When the Mexican government makes it more "safe" to commit a crime then they are also committing a crime. We should build a 20 foot electric fence and monitor it. Enough of this nonsense. People who cross our borders illegally need to do time. Enough of this crap about catching them, sending them back, and then re-catching them to send them back. I have no problem with immigration but our borders need to be controlled. Mexicans who want to immigrate should be helped to do so legally and through proper documentation. Our borders are not imaginary and sovereingty is not a joke. ------------------ The ox is slow but the Earth is patient. [This message has been edited by Timing (edited June 09, 2001).]
I'm still not getting it. I don't understand the tax structure, but basically illegals can pay taxes but not receive a refund ? Because when the government starts to send the check is when they will figure out this person is illegal ? ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? I don't mind border crossing at the level it is now; it seems to be a system that works for everyone. But the important question is: why is some of that stuff in their survival kit? Anti-diarrhea medicine in case they have to drink our water? (ha ha) And... condoms? Pills? Wow, I didn't realize crossing the border involved so much... activity. So what are they really crossing over here for? ------------------ Isabel,clutchcity.net lurker since 1996 We are the girls from Norfolk. We don't smoke. We don't drink. Norfolk! Norfolk!
GR-8, this is what happens. I know that you know what fake I.D.'s are!! Most teenagers use them to buy alchohol, tabacco, and to get into clubs. That is no myth!!! And I'm sure you'll accept that too. There is a black market for illegal social security cards out there. So, if someone who needs a social security card to work, then they use that fake social security card. Their payroll taxes are deducted like for you and me. They are having the same amount of money deducted. They are contributing to the economy of the same government that calls them illegals. The cost of wanting to work is that they pay into the entire system and are still being segregated. Being called fee loaders, etc. Just the cost of wanting to improve their lives and be productive in a flurishing society. And, nope. All illegals don't get paid cash. Smart business men don't do that. So, since these illegal immigrants don't have bank accounts they have to pay out another 2% or so to cash their check. Talk about being screwed all over and still fighting to make a good living. Low wages, paying payroll taxes, having to pay 2% to cash your check, and never getting a break. How petty does a person have to be to make a huge issue that immigration is the downfall of america. That hard working Americans are losing jobs to these immigrants. Whose losing a job. Well high paid lazy americans doing mediocre jobs. And by the time lawyers and architects start losing jobs to immigration, it is to the children of those immigrants. Thus losing jobs to the same American citizens. I'll get back with you guys in 3 weeks. Until then don't debate too hard. ------------------
Thank you for splaining. I see what you are saying, but they do have better lives here and I know that alot of them send money back home. Like many topics, there's no right or wrong answer on this topic. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? I don't agree with illegal immigration on any level. I understand that these people want a better life for themselves, but it doesn't give them the right to circumvent the laws of this country. If they want to be here then there is a process that must be followed. It is the law. Just because I want a good life for my family doesn't give me the right to break the law to make those dreams a reality. My wife came to this country LEGALLY from Colombia eight years ago. She applied for a temporary residency visa and was allowed entry into the US. The first 2 years she was here she worked cash jobs and was paid below minimum wage. She really had no choice as she needed the money and it is harder for a non english speaking woman to find work than it is for a man. 2 years later, about the same time that we met, she applied for permanent residency. She was accepted but it was a time consuming and costly process. After 5 years, we applied for her citizenship and it took three more years of money, time, and paperwork before she was granted citizenship. It was a long ordeal, but we followed the law and I think that this is the path EVERYONE should have to take if they want to be in this country. She wanted a better life for herself, but she didn't break the law to make that happen. I know plenty of people that have come from latin america to this country looking for something better. Most of those people were not poor people. Some were even professionals that had an overinflated idea of the prosperity that awaited them in the US. They realize now, after working menial type work compared to prior professions, that they were sadly mistaken. When I traveled to Colombia four years ago, everyone thought I was rich because I lived in the US. They seem to think that this is our birthright. Eventhough I don't agree with illegal immigration, I do think that our current system is flawed. In Houston it now takes over three years to be considered for permanent residency after you have applied. This process is entirely too long. I also think that the state dept descriminates against those with little economic means when it comes to granting visas whether they are immigrant or non-imigrant visas. My mother in law was just denied a visa to visit the US on vacation solely based on the fact that she is poor and has no job. There is no justice in that. I guess I should fly her to Mexico and load her up with condoms, Pepto, and water and let her take her chances. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Brad (edited June 10, 2001).]
Timing: I don't disagree with American national boundaries. Nor do I mind issues of sovereignty. I simply think people make too much of it. You and I are lucky to be American citizens. Great... but I understand that's a blessing, not a divine right. I'm not going to be sanctimonious and selfish in denying others rights. About it being "illegal:" does this make abortion ok in your opinion? Legalalities have almost nothing to do with ethics or advisable policy ;P. ------------------ Lacking inspiration at the moment...
