Thts only partially true b/c planes regularly fly routes that are not the shortest distance from point A to point B. But of course, if you are flying over the Atlantic when you are heading from Chicago to Minnesota, you have problems...
Not really. When I was flying back from LA over the summer (to Houston), we flew over water, and went as far west as San Clemente Island before turning around. I feel asleep once we did.
Unusual situation, I was watching the whole thing unfold at around 2 PM... it was pretty unusual for a hijacking to go down that way, where they just surrendered, but I guess they didn't have much of a choice if they had no weapons.
