LOL very funny but just to make it clear, I was referring to "baggage" as money left on their current contracts between Roy and CC.
Make it Martin Perez, Blake Beaven, Mitch Moreland and PTBNL and we have a deal, I'm sure the Rangers would say no though.
Baseball America is not based in the Northeast. It seems you've started with an assumption and are just throwing out reasons to fit that.
Its closer than you might think. Sabathia has never had an ERA under 3 in his career (Oswalt has done it four times). Sabathia's had a 4+ ERA in 4 years; Oswalt has one - however, that was last year. They have similar career peripherals, with Oswalt having a better career ERA (3.2 vs 3.6) - probably due to the NL vs AL issue. Sabathia was having a fairly bad season (for him) when he got traded; Oswalt is currently having one of his better seasons. I think there are arguments to be made for each of them. In 2008 when CC was traded, I'd have argued that Oswalt was across the board the better pitcher. Today, it's less clear because of Oswalt's subpar 2009 seaason.
Perez is untouchable... But I bet you anything that if the Rangers are in the playoff hunt in late July they will make a move. Rangers can give you a better set of young players than most teams.
TRADE TO THE RANGERS!?!??!? OUR CROSS STATE RIVALS ? WE WOULD NEVER DO IT!!! IMAGINE ROY PITCHING AGAINST US FOR THE SILVER BOOT! RIDICULOUS
The Astros-Rangers isn't a rivalry even though they play in the same state. Cubs-White Sox is a rivalry. It gets ugly.
I would guess that the Rangers won't be able to take on any additional salary given the state of their ownership.
Tim Lincecum is untouchable. Derek Jeter is untouchable. If you want the ace of the Astros, its gonna cost your best pitching prospect. Beaven and Kiker going to cut it, as neither of them projects as anything more than a #3. The top two prospects are Justin Smoak and Martin Perez, and between them I see Perez getting traded first. Trying not include Perez is like the Astros trying to trade for the ace of another team without including Jordan Lyles. Although the Rangers have an embarrassment of riches in their farm system, there are other teams out there that have good prospects their willing to part with for Roy O.
I would rather just keep Roy here. It will take 3 years at least to fix this mess so I prefer to have somewhat watchable baseball in the meantime.
You have to at least look at the possibility for Roys sake and the teams sake. Roy has been a joy to watch pitch and he represents everything you want out of a player. The guy deserves better than sitting in the gutter for three more years. Trade him to a contender and let him succeed.
This is "watchable" baseball??? Not his fault but if he can net us three productive young players I'd take it.
You really have to stop thinking like a homer.... You wont get a top prospect from any organization for Roy plain an simple. Alot of you dont know Mitch Moreland but hes a stud. Moreland, Bleaven, and Kiker would automatically be top 5 prospects in the Astros farm system.
depends what you call fix the mess. 3 good drafts will provide much more than what you could get from Roy and in the meantime I can watch baseball with someone who can actually pitch. He dominated Arizona and it was entertaining. I will take that any day over 2-3 prospects who won't see the field until they are 28.
This "The Astros are just a few drafts away from being good again" is really a stretch. Baseball draft is a crap shoot but you can increase your chances of drafting well by paying market value or over and getting multiple high picks for free agents leaving and such. After that it seems a crap shoot in later rounds. The Astros are a couple drafts away from getting their farm system back to middle of the pack if they draft well /pay our pics/ use all our picks (Drayton), get some talent with the trade chips we have now (Roy, Lance I pray for someone want Carlos ) AND we need to get lucky plain and simple. Need to find another Roy or Lance - franchise players in the draft. I just don't see a light at the end of the tunnel until Carlos comes of the books completely. Somebody argue against my post to make me feel better
