They've been testing light rail up here in Minnesota for a few months now and I haven't heard of any accidents.

Metro's REIGN OF TERROR continues! Look at how the light rail mercilessly *mangled* this vehicle. I pity the defenseless civilians held captive in this car as the train plowed into them with utter disregard. Keep these injured Houstonians in your prayers as they struggle to hold on to life.

A driver trying to make an illegal left turn in the Museum District was struck by a MetroRail train this morning, the first accident reported since the official start of the light rail line.

The accident happened about 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Fannin and Binz. Police said the collision tore the bumper from the car and pushed it onto a nearby sidewalk.

Metro spokesman Ken Connaughton said he understood two people from the car were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. The impact was apparently not noticed by passengers on the train, Connaughton said.

The accident is the first since the official start-up of the light rail line Jan. 1. Five accidents involving the trains occurred during test runs begun last year.

TJ, it's truly sad that you show more love for imcompetent Houston drivers that don't know how to drive without making illegal turns than you do for competent, safe driving, taxpaying, law abiding American citizens!:D

I just hope a child wasn't in the back seat.

Me too. If a child was in the backseat, the driver should be indicted for reckless driving and endangering a child, and if convicted, sentenced to jail time.

I agree. The incompetant, law-breaking parents should be charged with endangerment or attempted manslaughter.

T_J, do you have any statistics on how many *total* cars were mangled in Houston last month due to incompetant, law-breaking driving?

Illegal left turn. Don't make the turn, mensa.

    Basically.

We will always have bad traffic.

Not to give TJ more fuel, but ...........

    ABC13 Eyewitness News
(1/09/04 - HOUSTON) — It's been just over a week since the METRO light rail officially went online and already there have been a half a dozen accidents racked up. The latest happened around 8am Friday.

METRO police say the driver illegally turned left on Fannin at Binz in Museum District. But it might have been a signal problem. Eyewitness News crews caught the light both on and off. It's fairly difficult to see the difference, at least at the time of day this accident occurred.

Considerable damage was done to the car. One person was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. No one on the train was hurt.

METRO Police Captain Tim Kelly said, "Within about five minutes after this accident we had the track way cleared and the trains rolled in regular service."

METRO police say this is still part of the learning curve. This is the sixth accident involving the new rail cars.

I drove along side the rail from reliant stadium to downtown. I drove along the train on Main in downtown.

From this, I have learned that you must be an idiot, or not be paying attention to the trains, or the signs if you get hit by a a train. The sign clearly says you can't turn left Not that hard.

In the med center, eh, not too much trouble either.

    See, not that hard people.

Kam, this is not good data.

Your red hat and red shorts surely made you more visible to the train.

Houston has just tallied its first death resulting from the light rail. This has got to stop.

Woman driving down Metro tracks killed
    By S.K. BARDWELL
    Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle
A young woman died this morning while driving her Volkswagen Beetle along the Metro light rail lines down Main Street.

Witnesses told police the woman was traveling very fast, with her car's wheels apparently in the grooves that hold rails for the MetroTrain, which was not running when the accident occurred about 4:30 a.m.

Police said the car evidently left the tracks and struck a giant flower planter near Lamar Street, flying end over end and throwing the woman from the car.

Pasadena resident Lindsey Cook, 21, died at the scene of the accident.

What's gotta stop are these stupid posts. The woman wasn't even hit by a train. Do you want to dig up all the track and just get rid of all trains in Houston because of this woman's apparent death wish?

Houston has just tallied its first death resulting from the light rail. This has got to stop.

Now this is totally bizarre. This didn't even involve a train!

    WTF?

I offer my condolences to the family of the woman whose life was taken from her. This is a tragedy.

Where is Bill White in all of this? Will he be at the funeral? Will he be visiting with relatives of the murdered woman?

Where is the Republican's patented personal responsibility?

A poor child can't eat, that's their problem.

A women dies because she's driving her cars on rail tracks, it's not her fault, it's METRO's!

Give me a freakin' break. Using the death of a woman to promote your political agenda. Jokes.

While this woman's family is in my prayers, you have the liberals out there sarcastically mocking the tragic events that led to her death. Sickening.

I was just thinking the same thing, why do we even respond to them. They obviously can't think for themselves. And I really hope this isn't a joke to them.

When the HISD school system is depriving thousands of kids of a decent education, its the kids' fault. But some woman apparently is drunk or commits suicide, its the Rail System's fault. The joke is these guys.

Are you going to be at the funeral?

Did you care about the Hispanic kid that was killed by a cop who burst into his house while he was playing video games?
