If he dominates an entire World Cup and Argentina wins, then he's in the conversation.

See there lies my point. Maradona had coached himself into the World Cup final and couldn't coach Messi to beat Paraguay in the qualifying and had to do a voodoo dance for the last second goal to qualify. Same coach, Maradona did way way way better. Is that even a question?

It's clear that Maradona is just trying to sabotage Argentina to prevent Messi from winning the World Cup and claiming the "best ever" title.

We bought tickets in '94 to see Diego in Ducking Fallas. He turned into MaracocaĆna just the day before. :( BLASPHEMY.

I still say Maradona is/was better.

Here is your last round of Messi highlights.

Thank you for proving my point: the deity ones don't need a coach - you put a donkey in the head coach chair he is still going to win. Jordan and Maradona are such. Others need a coach to win, Messi included.

No, when Messi wins a world cup, leads an Argentina team w/ washed-up players beating the best team in the world and the host nation in the semi in the world cup and a 9 man Argentina fight like a tiger in the final, a struggled fringe club team to title in Serie A, does crazy insane stuff but still worshiped, and lastly is cheered by everywhere he appears, include opponent's stadium, then he can be compared to Maradona.

Messi needs a coach to win?

Messi's been a winner all his life and he's only 22!!!!

Messi has 2 UEFA championships. Diego only has 1 and he was 29.

If there is a debate already then by the time Messi is 30 he WILL be the best Argentinian player EVER.

Ryan Freaking Giggs has more titles to showcase than either of them, do you say he is better. Your logic suggests so. Plus, Maradona didn't have a 200 million worth teammates playing along side with him on S.C.C Napoli.

When it matters, Messi has won nothing, zero, nada.
If Messi leads Argentina in the world cup to beat a star laden Brazil or England in a game Argentina is not favored to win, I might then give him a little bit credit. Until then, Messi is always a Maradona wannabe

    Thank you.

You just compared your hero to Barry Bonds and all those cheaters!

I love the guy but to say Messi isn't close to him is a mistake.

Too be fair, Argentina has always been a highly overrated soccer power IMHO, just like Spain.

I can really only name 5 Argentinean players that would deserve to be in the top 50 ever.

    Maradona
    Di Stefano
    Batistuta
    Kempes
    Palermo

They're always compared to the big 3 (Brazil, Italy and Germany). In 78 they lost to Brazil 3-1 (Brazil did not lose one single game that year) and had to beat Peru by 4 goals to advance. Peru lost 6-0 in what was thought to been a bribe since Peru's goalie was Argentinean. That pushed them to the finals where they beat Netherlands.

In 86' Maradona completely took over and like Yallmean mentioned... his squad wasn't too good.

Spain sucks, the best they've gotten is a 4th place. I'm tired of people even putting them in conversations with the best soccer nations ever. You can win all the Euro Cups you want Spain, you will never dance with the big boys.

If Italy can manage to change their forwards (WHO SUCK ASS), they will repeat. I mean seriously? Fabio Quagliarella? Giampaolo Pazzini? Who are these players?

I know Maradona was a BAD ASS. He was soo strong, soo fast and never stopped running.

I just think Messi hasn't even touched his ceiling and he's great already.

Espana is almost there. They are young and my Dark horse this World cup.

that traitor Giuseppe Rossi is Italy's dream. I hate him so much for betraying us.

Yes, Argentina overall didn't contribute as much as other powerhouses like Brazil, Italy, Germany to the sports of soccer. Nonetheless, Argentina is always in the same sentence as those, you know why? Diego Maradona and Argentina appeared 3 times in the world cup final out of 4 from late 70s to early 90s. The 78 run had the benefit of home court advantage, so did France (the food poisoning and rowdy fans staking in front of Brazil's hotel before the game were no coincidence), England (Germany still wants the goal back). The Maradona show was OTOH HEROIC. Are you kidding me? The 86 world cup, he did it depite other team not playing whatsoever defense but chop him down, he did it when the pressure was as high as Himalaya when against England, when the disputes that couldn't resolved by war had to resolved in one match.
Messi, are you kidding me? The biggest battle the kid has been so far is at best border skirmishes and you want Homer to write about him?

No doubt Messi is the best player in the world right now, but Maradona may just be the best player ever (Sorry Pele, Zidane, Cryuff and Baggio).

Spain has talent but they're are bunch of pansies. They play the eloquent style of soccer but once they face a strong England or Germany team they will fold up. Villa or Torres would **** bricks if they saw Per Mertesacker/Ballack or Gerrard/Lescott in the backfield.

Italy's my team since my father is Italian, but... I'll root for the USA as long as they're not playing Italy :)

The deal of watching Italy in the world cup for me is like watching a greedy thief stole a goal, retreat, and defend it w/ all cost. But the Italians are very resilient.
