I don't think Shane's value will ever truly be known until he gets on a talented, healthy team. He is a role player in the purest sense of the term and role players are not really that valuable when they are not surrounding a few star players.

Bruce Bowen might have not even been in the league over the last 3-4 years if he was not playing for the Spurs. He has a corner three point shot and he plays tough on defense (and used to be good at that)...that's all he can do. Now if your team is full of players with little NBA talent that last thing you need is another guy who can only do one or two things like Bowen. If you have a team with significant talent you need a guy who only specializes in a few things so he can contribute while not getting in the way of your stars. Just like Bowen does/did for San Antonio.

If this team ever got it together all that would be needed from Shane is to hit open shots and play tough defense. But when this team's stars are out or sucking everyone is looking at Shane, "the glue guy" and asking why he isn't putting up 15pts and 7 rebounds a game.

The Rockets haven't been healthy ever since he's gotten here, and we still have put together a couple of 50 win seasons. Would that have been possible before, if we suffered a similar level of injuries?

To me, it seems pretty clear that Battier adds regular season wins. And I don't think we should discount the significance of that. But the issue that his detractors often bring up, and I think it's important to consider, is how helpful he is to winning against the really good teams and when it counts in the playoffs. Frankly, I think that's a question we could ask about a lot of our core rotation players.

Like I said earlier in the thread, if they don't achieve any actual success with Gay, or via pieces they get in exchange for Gay, I don't see how it can be argued that they got the better end of the deal.
