You're right- I honestly think they should just admit the screw-up and move on. There's way more important issues to cover.

Plagiarism is a big deal, though. Just like the whole lying on one's resume. Look how many people have gotten fired over that. Heck, I once worked with a client who wanted me to include certifications that he didn't have- and he was going for a position in security and loss prevention. Just, wow.

It does get you thinking: "Did I ever plagiarize?" Geez, I don't think so. But am I 100% sure???

The thing that bothers me most about it is somebody's cynicism toward the whole process: "Yeah, we'll slip Michelle Obama's words by those suckers and no one will ever know."

    They're playing us for suckers.

Well if they think they are playing us for suckers than they are the ones actually being suckered as they are severely underestimating the power of the modern internet search engine.

I don't think Donald Trump and his team realizes that a large portion of the America populace have a device that can 'fact check' on a constant 24/7 basis.

First of all Mel T did a great job with what she was given to work with -- imagine trying to give a speech in front of a high school public speaking class in a 2nd language -- very impressive.

What is most interesting about this is someone on the inside attempted to sabotage Trump -- if you think this is nonsense please read this article on the importance of this seemingly innocuous event.

Interesting link, Cheetah, thanks. That was a new take. Need to digest it and reread it before commenting further.

Thought provoking. I wonder if the mainstream media will pick this up.

Just apologize, fire the writer and move the F on...
At some point you move on...Trump doesnt have campaign folks that understand that.

    Anecdote:
Recently, my younger sister had her work straight up plagiarized by a Resident submitting a medical review article without crediting her work. I looked at her draft and compared it to the article online and saw paragraphs that are verbatim. You'd think that resident would apologize. Nope...instead she used her position of power (as my sister is still a 4th year student) and stated that "this was a great opportunity for her to learn"...and that her "pursuing this matter any further would be looked down upon and doesnt put her in good light with programs that she will be applying too..."

When people are accused of stealing/lying...instead of apologizing, people get defensive. Sometimes its ok to be wrong/contrite that you made a mistake and move on. The campaigns delayed actions/reactions are making this pointless story bigger than it should be...This applies for both candidates across the aisle.

As a 3rd/4th year you're pretty much at the whim of the residents, the attendings rely on their opinion of you. Most of them are nice but some (as a lot of people in medicine) are just assholes. What school/teaching hospital was your sister at? At the very least giving her some sort of authorship is in order and it wouldn't adversely affect the resident to do so. Doing what she did could have her kicked out of the program, I hope you told your sister to say that she was pursuing it and had evidence showing her contributions when confronting the res. No way the resident would jeopardize all that, seems like a bluff.

I had a similar thing happen to me. I had proposed the project myself, finished the research, presented at conferences, responsible for 90+% of what was in the paper. One of the students helping me took over and started working with a new faculty member on my project when I left (since they wanted it expanded). During that time he proposed the same crap, dug up the same old articles and would present them in a group of new people so it would appear novel. I had access to the google drive so imagine my horror when I see the same abstract/poster I had written being submitted to another conference without my name on it. I haven't said anything about it yet, knowing that all the records that I kept back me up, but if I get screwed over on the actual publication I'll make sure to let him know that his entire career is in jeapordy.

    Thread Derail response for Los...
Nothing happened, the Derm resident was spoken to by the attending, and my folks just told my sister to let it go. As per the attending, he claims that the online publication does NOT allow for student to be co authors/receive any form of credit. But he stated that he has contacted his resident and spoke to her about her actions. I was going to pursue it on my sisters behalf, but just want her to get in and secure her future as a resident. We technically have a ton of legal recourse that we could take, but some battles are just not worth it. Yes, that Derm resident could be fired. And I considered contacting the program's Research Department. But after much thought and discussion, this is something we decided against.

Interesting parallels in your story as well, but this is why being students stink. Lesson learned for everyone.

Just think it is best when people just apologize for the mistake...especially since this seemed to be an honest mistake by Melania/her writers. Thought she spoke as well as she could. Wish she had more personal tidbits in regards to her relationship with Trump, the husband.

Absolutely. As with most things, the cover-up is worse than the act. Especially when, in this case, the act wasn't that big a deal. Not laying any bets they'll do this, though.
True. This raises the issue of what the standards/statutes are for speeches, vs. written work.

Yes, Wow indeed! I have a friend that plagiarizes all the time: Google the first sentence of any paper he writes, and you find the original source. Kinda amazed it hasn't really bitten him yet.

This gets back to the difference between official written work (like a resume) vs speech or casual writing. I do think debate posts qualify as official written...another site I use has strict rules on copying things into your posts, to avoid any copyright issues (the limit is four contiguous paragraphs, I think).

Here's my rant- I've written over 15,000 resumes to date- and I'm ****ing running out of different verbs and adjectives to use. Directed, managed, led, supervised, oversaw, etc. Then, you start thinking you have to come up with new ones, but then they start getting a bit much:

    Orchestrated...

    Triggered...

    Catapulted....

    Spearheaded...

    Facilitated...

    Propelled....

    Leapfrogged the competition....

You start turning nouns into verbs. I think I used something like, "Pinwheeled the sales cycle..." once until I realized how ridiculous and nonsensical it sounded.

I mean, I have a struggle against a form of plagiarism every day- many of my clients are referrals, so they see each other's resumes, so I have to always be careful not to indirectly copy from one to the other. After a while, though, some of the phrases just keeping running on autopilot in your head.

The best way to avoid plagiarism is just keep a blank slate as much as possible when you write and then run your written work through a plagiarism software application. But it's tough at times. I mean, sometimes someone says something that is just exactly the way you would say it. But you gotta change it- that's just how it is.

For once, I'd love to write something like this on a resume:

"****ed over the competition and captured a deal that generated a ****load of money, cementing my reputation in the company as a badass mother****ing sales representative."

    EDIT:

I really do enjoy my work. It's just a bit tiring sometimes to reinvent the wheel. But there are 1,000s of individuals who have much more difficult jobs than me.

I'm sorry to hear that, its not right.

Hope the attending at least gives her a beast letter or makes phone calls, even though I'm sure your sister is already a very competitive applicant.

    Agreed
Trump is a Liar and a Cheat.
His wife is not seen as a Liar and Cheat

They don't believe in doing the work . . .they steal it then act like they did it themselves

Strikes to the heart of their integrity and their 'privilege' and worst of all Arrogance.
