They should only be spent on expansion projects which don't even reduce congestion? Also you are aware that infrastructure towards flying was/is heavily subsidized by the federal government as well right?

Come on man. You're messing up the broad stereotypes he's using to try to win this argument. That's just wrong.

I just looked at a trip to Dallas and a trip to Austin leaving on 08/31 and coming back a week later. Dallas was $51 ($28 and $23), Austin was $22 ($15 and $7).

That is over a week in advance booking.

How much do those rental cars cost? They aren't free - are they? If you rent by the hour, you still have to arrange to get to and from the facility.

Why don't you need a car in these places? If all you are going to do is stay downtown, perhaps so, but there are things to do where you need transportation. If you have family in those places, public transportation may not get you there.

Why is it stubborn to want to stop to go to the bathroom, take a break at a rest stop, stop for pastries at Collin Street Bakery, get some Barbecue at Rudy's, etc.?

Granted, there are people and situations that the megabus is good for, but to color folks who don't use it as morons, is, well, moronic.

bobrek, just stop it. You're being selfish. The federal government is subsidizing you're BBQ. Did you know that?

But, I don't want Rudy's or Buc-ee's to go out of business and if everyone took the megabus, the economy is doomed.

Is there a website other than megabus.com? I don't see any option to go from Austin to New Orleans.

Also, I just checked every day from now through 10/01 and from Houston to New Orleans, there were a couple of days where a $15 dollar fare was available, but the other fares were all $23 - $35.

I can book from ATL to NO for as little as a $1. Takes a lot of looking to find that deal sometimes.

My goal in life is to be successful enough to never have to ride a bus again.

HSR between any two medium distance cities would eat a majority of market share from airlines.

And how is HSR "outdated technology?" Planes have been around much longer than HSR..

The car is around $7 per hour. You don't have to pick up from a facility which is part of the beauty of zipcar/car2go/hertz 24/7

I don't think you need a car in San Antonio and New Orleans because the vast majority of people that visit those cities stay in downtown anyway. Austin is debatable. I'll agree with you on Houston and Dallas.

Also, if you have family wouldn't your family be able to pick you up and drop you from the bus station?

And it is stubborn because you're not willing to take a tradeoff to save money. Of course you can't have everything you want if you take the bus, except extra dollars in your wallet and extra life on your vehicle.

That fact that you're trying to force this thinking upon everyone is stubborn in itself. Some people prefer the privacy and overall convenience of driving themselves. What is so hard to understand about that?

I don't think my mother in assisted living is capable of picking us up.

You know, this whole conversation would be fine if you simply stated that good deals can be had on megabus and that for some people it would seem the way to go. Unfortunately, you called everyone who doesn't use megabus "stubborn" or "morons".
