Well, the thread does seem to serve as an illustration for the way a lot of these people "think."

The fact that congress does not equal Obama does not matter. Literally, it's like those synapses don't connect. There is the emotional reaction of "Tea Party > elected politicians!" and in that glee, I suppose, they can put in their favorite scary boogeyman, who happens to be an elected politician, the POTUS.

I am waiting for a long Smithsonian or National Geographic article on the GOTea

Good catch, I have updated the original thread to reference the right poll.

I know it’s a hard concept for tea partiers to grasp, but congress and the president are two equal but separate branches of government.

Here’s a short little video if you need further explanation

    So the question asked was:

[rquoter]5* When you think about the major issues facing the country, whose views are closest to your own President Barack Obama or the average tea party member?[/rquoter]

I would be interested in a follow up poll that questions respondents on specific issues or policy decisions. This question is very general, and it assumes that respondents have a good understanding of Tea Party's expressed views and Obama's expressed views. Depending on their news source, this may be a valid assumption or a very poor one.

This is an example of how to further productive D&D in America. Which can help everyone find common ground to stand on--even if their ideals are different. :)

This is an example of what happens when one has nothing of value to add to productive discussions that try to bridge the divide in America. :(

BTW, if it wasn't for black history in America and the efforts of the Civil Rights Movement, there is no doubt that other minorities, like myself, would have had a much harder time in America. So, I am very appreciative of what MLK and many other before him have done to make America a better place for all its citizens.

And of course, I believe racism is still an issue that exists and needs to be dealt with--but we have gotten to a point where it is now unfairly used to described anyone that has a conservative viewpoint--your comments being a prime example of my point.

(On a side note, did anyone else get reminded of the PE's album "FOABP" from vlaurelio's comments? BTW, one of my all-time favorites.)

More that 42% of the voters are Independent. They are the one that try to keep America centered.

IMO, these Independents are getting a sense that America has swung a little too far to the left, they are now siding with the Tea Party to swing it back to the right.

The GOOD news is that if the new government swings too far right, these SAME voters will come back and vote to the left--like they did for Obama.

This is a GOOD thing and should give all of us hope that extremism on either side will be kept in check by the Independents.

where were the teabaggers from 01-08 when bush was spending more than all previous presidents combined (in his first term alone) and expanding the federal government to unprecedented levels?

you are an extremist. there is nothing independent or centerist in any of your posts.

Until the philosophy which hold one race superior
    And another
    Inferior
    Is finally
    And permanently
    Discredited
    And abandoned,
    Well, everywhere is war.

The Tea Party movement is an anti-Obama, Republican movement. You say it's about the Independents, but a recent gallup poll indicates that only about 30% of Independents support the Tea Party movement. That number for Democrats is about 7% and for Republicans it is about 50%.

Looking at ideology instead of party affiliation, the polls show that less than 20% of self-described Moderates support the Tea Party movement. That number for Conservatives is again about 50%. The Tea Party movement is not moderate, it is not led by the people who are trying to "keep American centered." It is very conservative and largely Republican, not Independent.

What fascinates me about this data is that it never states what the G.O.Tea stands for or what their views are. Clearly no human I've ever met (in person at least) was queried, because everyone I know (again, outside this BBS) would say: "Agree with their views? What are their views? They're just angry, and they hate the President, and that's not a view."

Some interesting findings by the University of Washington survey.

So people who think the government has done too much to help African Americans are 36% more likely to go to the rallies.

Less than 50% believe blacks are trustworthy, only 35% believe blacks to be hard working, and less than 50% even believe blacks are intelligent.

I certainly hope that isn't a valid cross section of what mainstream America believes.
