It's more than coaching. There's two guys who are getting prominent minutes now and they couldn't play under Adelman. They've mentioned making plays simpler for Hill. It also seems like TWill is being given free rein to take over as a playmaker.
Kevin Martin just has to get used to Playing under Kevin Mchale. Kobe Bryant has to do the same with Mike Brown. I mean it happens when players got to get used to Coaches rhythm. Rick mostly did Princeton and backdoor Cuts and the Set Play. Kevin Mchale is mostly going to get more under the post because of his experience as a post Player
Besides, I'm not saying I agree with them, but a lot of people have claimed that the "new offense" is whack - I just wanted to see some examples from the tape. You can go through every thread and say "after one game?" but that is life on a board - people want to discuss stuff after they watch a game. If we do well and people are excited, I hope you go through every single thread and say "really, after one game!" and crush everyone's excitement. Yes, after one game. We've been waiting since March to see the Rockets play a game and now they have we are talking about their performance. Why don't you come back once your arbitrary number of games has passed where you deem it appropriate to discuss the Rockets performance? We'll be here. Ridiculous. smh.
I'm still upset that Rick Adelman is no longer with us. But I will reserve my opinions on Kevin McHale and the "super-assistants" after a couple more weeks. I hope they don't disappoint, but I do not expect to see the smooth offense again.
God love him, but its bout to be Rudy T all over again! Iso galore, minus all the shot clock violations. Moochie and Steve would dribble out the clock, but I see Twill ain't about to let the shot clock expire. Dude chunk more tha mike James and Von wafer combined!
He is getting fouled a lot. And I love the dude's game. But he's started out 12-32 from the field. That's horrible. Yes, I know his true shooting percentage is still solid because of the foul shots... but just pointing out, it hasn't been a perfect transition for him yet, either. The big issue I saw with the offense was just missing open shots more than anything. The Rockets had 26 assists and only 9 turnovers. They just shot poorly. By comparison, the Wolves had only 14 assists and 25 turnovers last night, and only 18 assists with 17 turnovers in their opener. Different talent, of course, but just noting, new coaching schemes take some time.
Teams with new coaching: Golden State: 1-1 Lakers: 1-2 Rockets: 0-1 TWolves: 0-2 Raptors: 1-0 Pistons: 0-1 Combined: 3-7 It's still VERY early, and typically a team has a new coach for a reason, but new coach, lockout, etc. has an impact, clearly.
The "inferior" style of play is what actually won teams a lot of rings. Spurs, Pistons, Shaq-Kobe lakers all used "let's pound it in" offense and old school defense. Other teams mixed it up a bit, like the Celts or the Shaq Miami Heat who used old-school D but relied more on perimeter players and jumpshooters like KG to win the game. Rick Adelman's style is beautiful to watch but even at its peak its won 0 rings. Well ok he got cheated out of 1 ring LOL. Regardless, its unfair to compare the two coaching style right because its only McHale's first game as a Rocket coach, while Adelman already had 3 years of experience installing his offense last year. If you want a legit comparison, go back to when Adelman first coached the Rockets, remember when he had Yao Ming standing far from the shaded area trying to Divac it? Yeah, it wasn't pretty then
McHale is just a means to an end. Finch is the future coach of the Rockets and is simply cutting his NBA teeth as an assistant.
We shot 44 percent from the field with 26 assists against one of the best defensive teams on the road while both our wings stunk up the joint. I'm one of the biggest RA supporter on this board, but we have to give McHale a chance.
rockbox is right. Our offense was alright despite a couple of players being off their games. High assists, low turnovers, average shooting percentage. We lost that game because the Magic shot 54%. What does bother me about the McHale offense though is that when we first hired him, the propaganda was that they were going to keep the Adelman offense. Now, they are putting in new plays, shifting the focus from the corner to the post. It sounds like they're using Martin differently. So, they aren't just going to maintain the offense that was working great. They're tweaking it, and it probably won't be getting better as a result. I'm worried.
Totally agree. It may be McHale's first game as a Rockets' coach but he has a record that cannot be glossed over. He had KG at Minny so a lack of a superstar is not going to be an excuse for him here. The so called coach in waiting cannot possibly be the difference maker in this team. It is what it is and no amount of spinning and arguing among CF posters is going to make any difference. I hope this whole team turns around soon, oh, someday.
