He has a big name, but players respect coaches who can make things clear and guide them through the difficult times. McHale isn't that person IMO.
Les,does like to go after names. I think McHale will get the job. Doc has already decided to continue in Boston.
My choice is Casey.Frank should be second.

Casey and Frank I see as the logical choices. McHale on the other hand is the X factor who if we do end up hiring him, it may not be entirely for his coaching ability.

I think when it comes to crunching numbers Morey has it down pat. I think he absolutely knows what is needed for a championship caliber roster. However, knowing is different than actually doing. When it comes to closing the proverbial deal that everyone keeps complaining about, there might be more to it than just numbers. Now maybe it was just that things didn't line up and there was nothing more that could be done. But we would be naive to think that relationships don't play a part in all the maneuvering in the NBA.

There is a reason why we always seem to get deals done with the Kings and Grizzlies. It's because of Adelman's history in Sacromento and Morey's buddy down in Memphis. For all of CD's faults this was an area that was his strong suit. People around the league loved him which allowed him to get things done. I think if we do end up hiring McHale that is what he will bring as well. He already has buddies in the front office in Bird and Ainge. Not to mention everyone else he knows in his X years in the NBA.

I think while Casey and Frank are much more "Morey" type candidates, McHale is much more the Ying to Morey's Yang where he can bring something completely different to the table. Complementing the GM, as opposed to being an extension of the GM. Not that I would be unhappy if either of them were hired, but I can certainly see why McHale, a seemingly out of the box candidate, is supposedly neck and neck for the job.

I guess I could have said this on any of the coaches threads.

But I was wondering, is it his system (offense/defense), the man himself (personality), his x's & o's, the people he puts around him. Which is it that makes one successful?

I wish I had something more constructive to say about our 3 finalists. But I dont know much about any of them, and am not sure how to evaluate them.

If you go by win/loss record, none of them is a slam dunk.

    So what is it?

I have a feeling that it would be Casey.

I don't see how McHale is going to be willing to play T-Will and Budinger.

I want McHale, but it will be Casey. Frank is too defensively-minded.

I don't want McHale to be the next Rockets coach But I think we underestimate his role as a great teacher ..

He really developed Al Jefferson's and he's partially responsible for Kevin Love's emergence, because I wouldn't link that in anyway to Kurt Rambis. My first pick is Casey by far And Frank is my second.

if the rockets hire mchale, it means we're not serious in winning the next few years.

If we hire McHale is means we're drafting a big white man in the draft.

The Rockets do not have a timetable to make the hire, according to a person with knowledge of their thinking, indicating that they would wait for Casey to become available after the Mavericks’ playoff run. Coaches are not permitted to have positions with two teams at once, but the Rockets could seek permission from the Mavericks to name Casey and allow him to finish his duties with the Mavericks if they choose him.

They have not made that request, and when asked if he would permit the Rockets to name Casey during the playoffs, Dallas owner Mark Cuban said he would not address a hypothetical situation.

Sounds like Casey is the guy but guess we have to wait and see.

Im thinking McHale is going to get the job as well. Morey and Les may be looking for a coach that is a teacher to the youngsters and McHale would fit that bill. Casey would be a great.

I simply can't imagine McHale getting the job. Seriously. Fire Rick Adelman to hire Kevin McHale? That would be a very, very poor joke to play on the fans of Houston. I would much rather see a guy like Casey have his shot at a head coaching position with the Rockets. Don't play the fool, Morey. Thanks in advance.

With the current roster the best that we can hope for is a #7 seed. We are in no mans land as a franchise, too good to get a top 5 selection and not good enough to be a contender.

The thing about McHale that would excite me is the work he did with Garnett, Love, and Al Jefferson on their inside game. If we could somehow get a young big I could see McHale developing their game.

    If we hire McHale:

    Larry Bird: "Hello?"
McHale "Hey Larry,it's me, Kevin. I need a favor"
Larry " HEY Buddy!! what do you need"
McHale " I want Danny Granger"
Larry " What do you have?'
McHale "I'll give you the one and only, the white Larry Bird, Chase "Hey
    BUD!!.... LET"S PARTY!" Budinger"
    Larry "Deal"
McHale " Thanks a lot Larry "

The more I think about it, the more McHale kind of makes sense if the Rockets want to groom Chris Finch as the successor.

    1. McHale is very personable, relates well to the players, and seems to delegate almost all the strategy to his assistants; that seems like a great way to get Finchy experience in game management and running practices while letting all the public blame fall on McHale, and preventing the team from quitting on a young rookie coach.

    2. Morey just picked up two loafers in TWill and Thabeet that might relate very well to another minimum effort kind of guy in McHale.

    3. I would think that McHale probably doesn't want to coach for very long; its too much work, too many hours and he has much better options available to him; I would imagine he'd come in on a 3 year deal, and make no fuss about turning over the reins at the end of it.

With all that being said, if he were to be hired, I think it would be more likely that he quit the team 20 games into the first season than it would be for him to get the Rockets into the playoffs.

Personally for me, I'd take McHale with an all-star cast of young, hungry assistants over Casey and his own handpicked staff, simply because there is zero chance the Rockets will win a championship under either of them, and I'd rather see if this "coach-in-waiting" idea has legs.

Pretty good thoughts. Not only McHale's respect around the league, but also his eye for talent and evaluating talent. I've seen many talk about a failed gm tenure and sure he had some misses, but drafting garnett was a huge gamble at the time. Not only that, getting googs to apir with garnett early and and getting rid of Rider. The garnett contract really crippled them at the time and marbury thinking money would determine the roles on that team didn't help either. All in all, he was a solid gm in a small market with playoff appearences.

I think he did a pretty good job as a coach for the most part. I like the work he did garnett as well as some of the other young players. I like casey also, cant stand frank. I think around the league mchale carries more weight than the other 2.
