Without some significant changes, the current team doesn't have enough talent to break in the playoffs. They are fun to watch, they are scrappy, and play with heart, BUT they are aren't as good as N.O. or Memphis. Now if they get a significant BIG in the middle, different ball game.
Well, it's up to Morey to trade away our talent for picks if we going to rebuild through draft route. But since he said he ain't tanking ever, He will probably improve the roster and therefore I will expect a run at playoffs next year unless some critical injury occurs (knock on wood).
Awesome! Let me buy season tix right now so I can have the option of reserving first round playoff tix for years on end.
Leaving out the bit about improving the roster, which will have a significant impact on the team's ability to make the playoffs (or does this go both ways in which 3-4 people will also now be handling not only coaching decisions but also GM duties?)... He shouldn't take all the pressure on himself since he'll be sharing head coaching duties with the GM, the owner and the assistant coach he'll be grooming to replace him, a new system designed to 'catch up' with the rest of the NBA though every other NBA team is still ensconced in the 'old ways' of letting the coach be the coach. At any rate it's only 25% or so on him. It would be more to the point to say that if they miss the playoffs it's on the daft notion that the coach should involve the owner and GM in coaching decisions.
They are one or two players away from being a 55 win team. With a declining Spurs & maybe Mavs team in the next 2 or 3 years in the Rockets division, thats a solid team. The tanking theory has been debated more times than neccessary on this website so Ill save that debate for another day. The Rockets just need to continue to get better, both by adding personel/ subtracting the negative personel/ coaching & development/ Trades/ Draft/ etc.
McHale saying this means absolutely nothing. He's the coach. Of course it's on him. Now, if he would have said something like "if we don't make the playoffs, then that's on me and i will take a 50% pay cut because i did not do my job."...well...that means something. anyone inevitably saying "it's on me" is either stating the obvious or full of it because there is no consequence for saying it (cough...TMAC..who is king of saying sh_t that doesn't mean anything). so...add some consequence to it. lol
Don't put Adelman on a pedastel. Yea he is a great coach but McHale could very well do it as well. If McHale fails, why not put the blame on him? He said it outright so it's to see someone be held responsible.
Actually, I think it's all on Les. Seems to me that Les has a lot more control over the team than I thought he did. Some of the decisions being made up top that I thought were Morey decisions actually seem to be Les decisions... and I'm not sure how I feel about that moving forward.
A p.s. to the tankers on the board: I strongly believe you are living in a fantasy world. This comes up as a fan-preferred strategy again and again and again, but it is never even considered (as far as I can tell) by either the front office or the coaching staff.
So, does that mean if we DO make the playoffs, he, and the notion that the coach should involve the owner and GM in coaching decisions, and the supposed 'new way', should in turn get credit and approval? Since the 'old way' obviously didn't get them there. Leaving out the bit about improving the roster of course. And btw, GM duties have always been a collaborative effort between Daryl, Hinkie, Gerson Rosas, countless scouts, the owner who signs off on major decisions, and oh, almost forgot, the coach.
Could really care less about winning games with this group right now. Morey's performance is much more important over the next two years than McHales.
This team is fundamentally flawed and WILL NOT be a playoff team as currently constructed. No Superstar wants to play here.......we suck. Nobody wants our role player....so no Superstar trade coming. We are quite possibly in the worst position a team can be in. 9th place....I'd rather be Cleveland.
Someone should be held responsible and that's Morey. We already know our current roster isn't a contender. If we're going to get anywhere, it'll be because Morey brought us some talent. McHale's not going to turn our guys into a superstar with good coaching. Morey could though with good trading. Which brings up another problem I have with this statement. I don't give a flip about making the playoffs. Being a bottom-seed playoff team (which is the ceiling on the current roster) isn't a goal to be excited about. That's like making graduating high school a life's goal. If the team is going to be anything, making the playoffs should be something taken for granted.
if we can't get out of the first round this year...
