No, it isn't stupid to keep him. He's got a guaranteed contract. The thought process is this, he may be useful at the trade deadline to facilitate a trade. Maybe they can find some game to run him out there and he'll collect double digit rebounds and throw down a few dunks, look really appetizing to some other team and we can use him to give us a trade. If not, and we need the roster spot, we can release him in January and pick up Conroy or some other player that we have better need of. Hopefully McGrady is helping those other guys that are in the rotation. I don't know if he is. All I know is the article is talking about him working "overtime" to help Dorsey. Fine. He may help Dorsey but that isn't working overtime to help the team because Dorsey isn't going to help this team. Dorsey may benefit down the road and McGrady may help stick another couple million in his pocket by teaching him some trick that he can use in the post to get a couple easy buckets and get some to fall in love with him. But that isn't helping the Rockets or working overtime to help the Rockets. I stick with what I said, to help the team, McGrady should stay after practice and help Ariza with his handle, help Budinger and Ariza with the ball fake so they can learn to draw fouls off their jumper, etc. That would be working overtime for the team since those guys have extended contracts and are going to be seeing actual quality minutes for us this season. Helping Dorsey is a favor McGrady is doing for Dorsey.....maybe because he likes him. Nothing wrong with that as long as it's not on the clock when he is supposed to be working for the Rockets either rehabbing or helping Adelman and the coaching staff get guys to understand the system and teaching guys in the rotation some of his bag of tricks. Once again, I am a McGrady supporter. I am hoping/wishing/praying he comes back and integrates himself into this team. In fact, I am actually hoping he comes back strong and we don't trade him because I do not see a trade out there that would make us better than a healthy McGrady would. As far as Chuck blowing out his knee, if that happens, our season is over. Chuck may be the most important player we have on our team this year and if not, he is one of the top 4 most important players we have on the team. Any serious injury to Scola/Battier/Chuck will have a devastating effect on our season and turn us into a lottery team. Some of you already think we are lottery bound. I happen to believe that if we stay healthy (a big if), that we will be top 6 in the West and if McGrady comes back strong and fits in, we could make into the top 4 in the West. Carry on with the Dorsey love, Dorsey lovers.
IIRC, Dorsey is a friend of McGrady's brother. I think he even mentioned working out with or at McGrady's place pre-draft.
This reminds me of a funny joke that a French guy told me: "The Pope, George W. Bush, and Jacques Chirac go on a fishing trip. As the boat is heading out to sea, a gust of wind comes and blows the pope's hat off into the water. Bush tells the captain to stop the boat, so he can help the pope get his hat. George W. Bush gets out of the boat, walks across the water, picks up the hat, and non-chalantly walks back across the water into the boat. The pope was truly amazed and thankful. The next morning, the Paris newspapers reported on the miracle. The headlines read: "GEORGE W. BUSH CAN'T SWIM!"
Or it could be that Dorsey is the only one who ASKED McGrady for help. He doesn't seem like the type who'd volunteer, but if someone asked, he might agree.
Teams tend to use scrub centers because they represent an extra 6 fouls in certain situations where they match up against the opposing teams. This helps against teams with good centers who can't shoot the FT particularly well (hack-a-Shaq ring a bell?).
The best way for McGrady to help the team is just to go away for good. In blog after blog he causes so much controversy and animosity that just his presence in Houston sucks the wind out of this season's sail, so to speak. The constant exchange between the pros and cons distracts from the real excitement of a new season. Just the mere mention of his name creates hypertension among the partisans so enough already.
If a major part of keeping Dorsey is because of his 800k guaranteed contract, why not buyout his contract and kept Barry's contract instead? Somehow, either Morey or RA still thinks Dorsey as a project, and thats why Dorsey is still here. On the topic that why Tmac helps him, is probably Dorsey is the only one that actually ask for Tmac's help.
What does McGrady know about playing in the post? That's the strangest thing about this article to me.
Note to Dorsey... Do NOT get help from TMac, you don't have enough of an NBA game to survive the fallout and hate of being mentioned in the same article as Tracy. The TMac hate is just plain stupid, I am not a big Tmac fan and I don't think he has ever been the teamate he could be but he is still a Rocket and helping another Rocket is a good thing. FYI TMac should be listening to his doctors about the microfracture surgery because rushing back from microfracture is the worst thing you can do.
The change in my quote was kinda cute. Not funny though. I admit before all and sundry that I am a big Yao fan. I am also a big fan of Scola and Battier. The difference between these players that I admire a lot and McGrady is that they play with their hearts out despite their physical limitations. They have big hearts and, take note of this, together, they have been to the second round of the playoffs and took the eventual champions to the limit with no excuses and drama.
And you know why they play their hearts out? Because they are limited. Tracy in the past relied too much on his talent level as have many others. Those were the vast majority. That is why Kobe is an exception. Exceptions are rarely unique. Kobe's flawed too. Not in his game but in his psyche. He sometimes forget about his teammates or smack them because they did wrong from his angle. I think once Tracy figures he has no chance than working his butt off then he'll survive in this league.
