I'm just more entertained by it all. I love the people, posters here included, who defend the stance he took on this (or other issues like this) and act like he's righteous in his argument. Then he just says "siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike" and we move on. I mean there were people making passionate arguments about why his position was right and that we would never confirm a judge in an election year blah blah blah. LOL I just love it.
All i read about it was this post. If he didnt say it in jest then i disagree. I was busy all evening
OK, I'll give you that. O'Connell wasn't kidding, though. He essentially did the same thing with Judge Merrick Garland during President Obama's last year in office, not even giving the distinguished jurist a hearing.
You recognize the risk he took though right? If Clinton wins, she could have put up someone much more left of center than Garland was. It was a calculated gamble that paid off for conservatives.
"Risk?" It was an unprecedented move on McConnell's part. All he had to do was give Judge Garland, a moderate, a hearing and confirm the man. With all due respect, what you said doesn't apply at all. Ms. Clinton had nothing to do with it. Any judge she might have wanted on the court would have had to be for a new vacancy. Judge Garland was left "twisting in the wind" for months and months while awaiting a hearing, which McConnell made sure he didn't get, much less a vote up or down for confirmation.
I'm not arguing the fairness of Garland receiving a hearing or not. I'm simply stating it was a calculated political risk that could have backfired.
Of course. But again, McConnell was risking the Republicans holding the Senate. There was no "guarantee" of that.
Betting that trump win or R hold the senate or Clinton wouldn’t select extreme left candidate or a 60 majority D senate or a less than super majority D not using the simple majority rule for SCJ... of course polling at the time indicate a likely Clinton win and a likely R hold on the Senate. It wasn’t much of any risk. But risk or not, it’s an unprecedented shameful act that further divided this country.... if and when the D obtain power and act this way in return and actually re-escalate such shameful tactic we might as well start thinking of civil war 2. But don’t worry, most human, even politician can’t reach such low level.
