He's getting a lot of run. Last week I saw a few articles about that female governor in Alaska(Palin, I think). She seems like an interesting choice. If McCain wants to go with a black VP candidate, who are his choices? Powell, Steele, and Watts? I don't think Rice is interested.
If he really wants to have bipartisan appeal, how about Ford? He seems pretty conservative for a Democrat, but should help bring in the moderates and more centrist Dems.
McCain's problem is consolidating his base on the right. He already doesn't have the support of half the party - adding Ford to the mix is just going to make it that much worse.
the problem w/ that is 1) dems arent going to break w/ their party. even the conservative or centralists. hes already hampered by the fact that he is in the same party as W. mccain may not be responsible w/ the problems/scandals of this admin. but he carries the "R" behind his name. 2) would piss off certain factions of the republican party even more. i think mccain should just solidify his national security strength by choosing colin powell. remind voters that there are still 2 wars. he has war experience... he will win the war and get our troops home... i think this strategy would be his best hope.
I think that problem could be overblown. McCain may not be a favorite of the far right, but he certainly caters to their interests more than Obama. Would the avoidance of an Obama or Hillary presidency be enough to get the vote out on the right? I believe Ford is also pro-life (30% rating from NARAL), as is McCain (0% rating from NARAL), so that will help to solidify a sizable portion of the GOP base. McCain's biggest weakness for the base is immigration, but how many people are single issue anti-immigration voters? Going after the center has the dual advantages of distinguishing himself from Bush and taking a vote away from the other side for every vote he picks up. This is all based on the assumption that he wants a black veep. Condi would hurt him by connecting him to Bush. I think there would be problems getting Powell on board. Steele might not even deliver Maryland. I just think Ford would be an interesting direction to go, and he was doing really well until the white girl ad, which doesn't seem like something the Dems would run against him. A bigger obstacle might actually be getting Ford to attach himself to a 'pub.
My political science professor thought Mike Huckabee would be a great choice as McCain's VP. He's a much more conservative option, and he would get some more of the core Christian groups on the Republicans. It would also be great for Huck, so he can get more exposure for the nomination in 2012.
I think Ford would be great. One of the few Dems I respect(at least among those who are on national TV regularly). Problem is he'd be ostracized by his own party if he accepted a VP slot on a McCain ticket. Look at what they did to Lieberman over the Iraq issue alone.
Not at all. With McCain's age and health, there's a very good chance a Democrat would become president after all.
That would be great, except he's a dumbass, A goofy laughing stock. A Gomer. Gomer Huckleberry. Who here doesn't believe evolution is a viable scientific theory?
I haven't read the whole thread, so he might have been suggested, but if he wanted the best shot at winning he'd pick Chuck Hagel. Impeach Bush.

The far right wingnuts don't much like Hagel. Some independents do, but I suspect that they will put more emphasis on the top of the ticket. Besides, McCain and Hagel are not close wrt Iraq.
I highly doubt McCain will pick Condi Rice as his running mate. On paper she looks good, black woman Secretary of State, but if anything the past seven years have shown is that she has been a toadying yes woman to Bush who has sold out her better judgement and consequently gotten hammered over it, rightfully so, in Congressional hearings and the media. She has also never run for public office and its doubtful that she would be up for dealing with the sort of grind a huge campaign would be or would perform that well.
