I said it jokingly, but I think it makes sense. At the surface, his record seems really conservative. As VP candidate, he won't get the scrutiny that McCain would, so he can brag about cutting taxes and creating a strong surplus, doing a good job on the economy, and his "virtual fence" where he "did something" about illegal immigration. Texans will yell about NAFTA toll-roads, selling out to drug companies, and a starve-the-beast public school policy, but no one will care much nationally.
too bad because i would strongly consider assassinating mccain just so we could have a terminator as president. suerrrriously would be funny
Maybe so. Perry is much different from Bush, so I don't know how much it would affect him. Here's a crazy idea for McCain's VP: Harold Ford, Jr. While he got hammered by Republican ads in Tennessee, he was one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress. It would cement his image as a maverick, and it would gain at least a few black votes in the South. It wouldn't do much to energize the base, but if the strategy is to claim the center, it might do just that.
Apparently so. I'm actually surprised, because it seems like every time I see him on Fox, he is absolutely bashing Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid.
To those who mentioned Colin Powell and Chuck Hagel, not a chance. They both vehemently disagree with McCain on Iraq. And neither helps him with conservatives. After being booed repeatedly at CPAC today, you can bet McCain's thinking of somebody that will help him with that group.
So I did some searching on the blogosphere. It seems like the most common name that keeps showing up is Tom Ridge. They could be the ultimate superstar let's-kill-terrorists ticket, but I'm not sure I understand it.
They also booed him when his name was mentioned. Maybe repeatedly was overstating it, but when CPAC attendees have to be instructed not to boo their own nominee (which they were at check-in) he's in trouble.
except it has been fixed militarily, although there's certainly work to be done on the political side. anyone who would advocate withdrawal now has no clue about what's actually happened there in the past year. and where is mccain on record as saying we should have stayed in vietnam?
I don't remember where I saw the McCain Vietnam thing, but I've seen it a couple different places. If I run across it again I'll post it. Iraq has been fixed? That's awesome! Explain to me again why we're still there if the work left to do is political? You seem very confident, going into an election year, holding a position that is held by about 35% of the country. But I know you don't care about polls; you just want to be wrong. Keep up the bad work!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Charlie Crist of Florida. He's a young, articulate, smart, likeable governor from a state that is both Eastern and Southern with a lot of electoral votes.
I thought Powell was pro-choice, pro-welfare and pro-affirmative action; which was partly why he never ran himself. I also wonder if he's more than slightly damaged. If another batch of bad intelligence comes along to support questionable military action, will Powell have the gumption to question it, privately or publicly, or will he just play the good soldier again?
