I think you might be missing the gist what he said just slightly. I don't think he meant literally that peace and compassion wasn't preached about much, I think he meant that those things haven't been practiced or emphasized nearly enough.

I hope you realize (and I believe you do) that no one is saying the church is evil. There are a lot of fantastic Christians out there, and I have to say that I myself have gleaned a lot of my own personal moral code from Christian values.

The problem is, pretty much every philosophy of life is great in theory, including Communism. What so often ruins the church is the less-than-perfect people. There are far too many people who play cafeteria-style with the Bible, latching onto things like homophobia and ignoring the real message: love thy neighbor, treat others as yourself, compassion, forgiveness. For so many, the church is nothing more than a way to hate and exclude, and it's a pity those people give the true Christians a bad name.

I suppose it's the price paid for being essentially the "official" religion in the area: you get a lot of the dregs.

Something I always noticed, as a guy who has gone to services for several different religions out of sheer curiosity, was that most smaller-time religions seem very welcoming and kind to newcomers. Their attitude towards me seemed to be "we're happy that you're here, and we're gratified that you have an interest in learning about our faith." Not so for Catholics, though. A lot of times when I went to a service and didn't go up for the eucharist, I got distinctly dirty looks from people, who seemed to wordlessly be saying to me "we are entitled to be the official religion of the world, and you are below us because you are not part of it."

But if the Pope says something like Wright said, would you consider switching to Protestant?

McCain calls Hagee views “nonsense,” takes jab at Obama

    by Mosheh Oinounou

New Orelans, LA — Rev. John Hagee’s view that Hurricane Katrina was punishment for the sins of New Orleans residents is “nonsense,” McCain said at least nine times aboard his bus today.

The DNC has been calling on McCain to specifically condemn those remarks for weeks even though the GOP presumptive nominee has previously rebuked other controversial Hagee remarks.

“It’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense. I don’t have anything additional to say. It’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, I don’t have anything more to say….it’s nonsense. I reject that categorically.”

Hagee endorsed McCain in late February.

If someone who practices my religion says something dumb, it does not make me want to change my religion. My religion worships God, not the Pope.

    Wow..... just wow.

Actually, maybe that's not so bad, as long as you don't stop with Islam.

    <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jEOkxRLzBf0&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jEOkxRLzBf0&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

But then, imo that would ruin the "hope" and "faith" of humanity.

    P.S.

Amazing how ahead of his time John Lenon is

We need to declare war and obliterate the people who make non-stories like this into political headlines.

On both sides of the political spectrum.

bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

    NO

bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

The reason Wright sticks to Obama and Hagee slides right off McCain is because many of Obama's speeches and positions seem to indicate that he's not exactly bleeding red, white and blue...

I was going to let this go, but jorge can you point out the speeches or positions that Obama seems to hold that are not exactly bleeding red, white and blue?

Well endorsing a 'pastor' who says "God DAMM America" in Church on Sunday isn't a good start. Refusing to wear a lapel pin unless it is thrust upon you by a disabled veteran isn't a good start. Having your wife not be proud of America isn't a good start. Not covering your heart during the Star Spangled Banner isn't a good start... Being friends with a known terrorist like Bill Ayers isn't a good start... wow, this list can take a while...
