Would help if this poster could follow the quote string. I thought you were referring to Obama bringing up the POW issue. Der. My bad! :)

When the subject is education or housing or the economy he reflects back to his past. So does McCain. They don't have the same story, but it isn't outlandish that they look to their past to connect on issues that concern the public. Those quotes from Obama are from speeches on things as far ranging as the environment, economy, and foreign policy.

So how does being a prisoner for 5 years give him insight to the economy? I understand growing up with a single mom on food stamps might give one insight on the economy but being a prisoner?

What is the problem with being poor? Hmmmm.....lack of food, poor housing, dangerous environment, poor or no healthcare (not even emergency rooms).....Being a POW is like being poor but worse.

lol, I think Hayes is proving my point. Only to number 11.

As ridiculous as the POW auto-defense is, at the end of the day you're still arguing about a POW story, which unless you fully intend to go all out/to the jugular, is a non-winner.

    reread what you said....

Im not saying being a Pow is better or worse than being poor....but your comparison is delusional.

Sorry, I was more amused than anything at the direction the whole conversation had turned. I shouldn't have included the lol. (I'm in a pretty good mood, hence the to number 11 comment.)

But with how quickly it turned, I was feeling a little psychic.

 I listed off several factors which are aligned with being poor. They are also aligned with being a POW, only the conditions are actually much more harsh. How am I being delusional?

You really believe that a person that was a POW has the same viewpoints as a person that is poor?

So if its ok for POW to ditch their wifes... is it ok for poor people to ditch their wifes for richer partners?

I can play this game too ;)

    Your comparision is almost offensive

A point I'd like to make:

One of the two must change people's minds from spam mail/fox that he isn't a foreigner/muslim. So, explaining where he comes from makes a lot more sense than "word verb pow!"

The conditions are the same, or worse, as a POW...but our problems aren't caused by an enemy combatant capturing us. McCain's experience may help him empathize with those who are living with very little...but it does nothing to show that he understands the cause behind it. At best it's a loose comparison, which should be used only for the emotional weight behind it...unfortunately he's throwing it out there every day so it kind of loses it's punch.

The difference is that McCain uses it as an excuse when things go bad for him. Obama talks about his background to let people know where he is coming from. It is either related to the issue at hand, or he's simply talking about his past.

Discussing the POW as an excuse for cheating, or having no clue how many homes he owns, or any of the other stuff that he uses it for is different than saying, "This is my background and that's why I have this way of looking at things." It isn't used as an excuse.

Some of the same conditions (but worse), yes. That isn't a belief, it's a fact. Arguing otherwise is just dumb.

    That's another question.

    You're an idiot.

They just have to change people's mind about different things.

The point is that he can empathize with those who are living with very little. That is (at least on this topic) the point he is making. Just as Obama makes that point when he talks about his history (on this topic).

It may or may not be losing it's punch, but that's another argument to whether or not it's legitimate for him to do it.

Excuse or answer - it's just a matter of your opinion vs someone who supports/is open to McCain. The economic/housing debate is a perfect example of this. McCain says 'yes I can empathize because this is my background and that's why I have this way of looking at things." You just don't see it because you want to draw a line that isn't there.

Uh...statistics that say that being a POW in Vietnam meant you didn't have a lot of food or good living conditions or good healthcare etc? No, I don't have any statistics on that but I'm fairly certain anyone arguing otherwise is either being disingenuous or a troll.

that's not what McCain did. He didn't say I can relate to the common man because of my background as a POW.

He said, "don't get mad at me for not knowing how many houses I own, because I was a POW."

I didn't see the quote where McCain said that - you want to point to something that sounds like that (since we know he didn't say that)?
