That is the only time the media shows them saying it. That is also the time when someone like yourself tends to acknowledge it.

Whether you like it or not, the phrase "Allahu Akbar" has become associated with Islamic terrorism among non-Muslims in the United States. The media (especially recent best-selling fiction books and movies) have associated all suicide bombers with this phrase. So for McCain to associate Allahu Akbar with a common exclamation used in the US ("Thank God!"), he essentially equated common Americans with terrorists. I think that was the point being made here by DH13. I don't think anyone is trying to call all Muslims terrorists. DH13's problem was failing to provide the context for his conclusions, thereby confusing everyone.

Let's all take a few deep breaths, acknowledge any misunderstandings and move on. There is no need to blow this way out of proportion.

He wasn't equating the actors, he was equating the phrases. That you have a stereotype mainly associating the phrase with terrorism is just our own ignorance.

I'm an Arab. Arabic is my native language. I'm a Muslim as well. Oh, and I'm an Aggie. Here's a little story from this Saturday:

I'm watching the A&M vs. Rice game, I'm knocking back a few cold ones and relaxing at home
Tra Carson, the Aggie running back, scores an awesome touchdown
I exclaim in excitement: "Allahu akbar! what a sweet move!"
    the end

That is a classic use of "allahu akbar". allahu akbar isn't something reserved for terrorists blowing themselves up. We commonly say it at sporting events, when we get a raise at work, when we find out the test was postponed, hell, even when we see an insanely attractive girl ;). Senator McCain is correct, it is used pretty much like "THANK THE LORD!" or "PRAISE JESUS!" is used here in the U.S. And frankly, OP, I am highly offended by your post insinuating that all of us are terrorists. With the internet existing today and with the unlimited resources we have, ignorance is no longer an excuse for racism and bigotry.

Even as destructive, costly, unnecessarily deadly, wholly built on lies and bigotry, and wrong-headed OIF was, I'm still reluctant to associate it with the Crusades. That there was some heinous, irrational bull****.

Except DH13's point was stupid - because the whole reason McCain said what he said was to point out that what we believe about the phrase is wrong. He wasn't associating a common American phrase with terrorists. He was associating a common Muslim phrase with normality.

DH13 is basically saying McCain is ridiculous for trying to explain the truth.

    Well.

It's not entirely the same. Unless you have heard of people murdering others while shouting "Thank God".

So I guess at least the phrase is more easily misused than "Thank God".

    This.

There is plenty to criticize Islam and Muslims about... The use of "Allah Akbar" is not one such example.

Nobody is insinuating that Muslims are terrorists. Literally not one person on here is arguing (or even insinuating) that all Muslims are terrorists. Honestly, becoming offended by this forum is fruitless and ignorant in its own right.
