McCain had met her just one time prior to yesterday.

Last Sunday, Governor Palin and John McCain had a conversation over the phone.

    _______

Wow, they shook hands once and chatted on the phone -- unbelievable.

i don't know that much about the mondale situation. was his base fragmented like mccain's? did ferraro help solidify support from liberals with her selection?

Considering they won one state, I'm going to say no. :)

I hope glynch is wrong, but a lot of people feel the same way as him. The antiwar crowd has been pandered to by the Democrats for a while now, and Bush, Bush, and Cheney have given the Democrats plenty of ammunition. It's a shame, too, because the only pro-peace Presidents we've had in 100 years have been Republicans. Coolidge and Eisenhower have had the most sensible foreign policies we've had. It seems that the Dems, from Wilson to Truman to Kennedy to Johnson to Clinton, have always been the ones that can't stand peace.

The last time a Senator from Arizona running for President let his opponent define him as a pro-war candidate, the country ended up with the second-most radical warmonger, a horrible war, and the destruction of an economy. That might have happened again (bomb, bomb Iran), had Obama not chosen the second-biggest warmonger in the Senate as his running mate.

To be fair to Democrats, they aren't the biggest warmongers in Washington. The biggest warmongers are the "Independents". Namely, this one:

Obama's popular, but he's no Reagan in 84.

Maybe he spent a lot of time googling pictures of her...

oh wait, he doesn't use the interwebnets.

Yes, that surprises me. I would have more expected a narrative of "I recognized a year or two ago this fellow maverick, and I first called to congratulate her on ending the bridge to nowhere..." , et cetera.

Not a minimal acquaintance scenario. Kind of weird. Still think it's a smart pick.

well that was kind of my point. i was just wondering if heyp could clarify his position for me because i don't see it as a desperate pick since she has been so widely embraced by the conservatives who don't really like mccain.

The griping about the Clintons just doesn't stop. Hillary Clinton publicly slew her own campaign and rhetorically slapped down her most ardent supporters. I would say she and Bill have done plenty to support Obama.

    Not true in my world.

Plus, college very much helps you decide how to view the world and think about things. It's more than a resume filler. Of course, I'm a Liberal Arts guy.

Forget kooks like Michael Savage. I'm not saying McCain made a good choice, but I'm glad a bozo like Savage is upset about it. Now I'll cut Palin a little extra slack. ;)

Yes!!! After the fact that I really like and respect Governor Palin, the third-best thing about it is that the Kos/HuffPo crowd hates the pick. The second-best thing is that the loud neocon idiots like Savage hates the pick. Now if we can just get Bill Kristol or Cheney to go after her, I'll be a really happy man.

Based on the initial reaction from the ladies on my job, it's doesn't look good for McCain. They are curious about Palin but mostly made fun of her. That isn't the initial "gut" response the Republicans wanted.

Based on the initial reaction of most of my guy friends, it's looking like McCain just picked up a lot of previous undecideds and nonvoters.

Seriously, I don't think Palin will get as many of the Hillary voters on the McCain ticket UNLESS Biden says/does something stupid that is openly offensive and patronizing to women... which potentially could happen if you know how loquacious Biden can be. That said, I DO think Palin, at a minimum, strengthens McCain's hold on the conservative right.

    THink about it.

    Pro-LIfe, Pro-Gun. Mother of FIVE???

Women AND Men on the conservative right will flock to them like bees to honey. THe Bible Belt states are going to come out strong for the McCain ticket where once they might have been more apathetic given McCain's tenuous grasp on these voters. Collectively, there's a lot of electoral votes to be had by McCain in the Midwest and Southeast.

If he fails to carry NY and California. So what? He might just have gotten Texas, Florida, and all the Bible Belt states with this move.
