See my post above. He's hoping to get Obama to stop running ads so the ones hammering McCain on the economy will go off the air and he can control the issue better through the news cycle. The hope is that it will at least stop the bleeding on the economic issues if there's a political ceasefire.

This campaign issue is a no-win for McCain.

I don't blame him for trying to make Obama look like the bully, because this crap has Republican fingerprints all over it.

The only way he can look good is to have a "solution" to talk about during the debates... railroad that bailout through congress, then stand atop that turd pile of legislation proclaiming that you saved America.

I was wondering the same thing. Aren't these ads already paid and scheduled for? It's not like McCain is busy doing these ads live, setting aside time every day.

    this discussion is inane.

the debate is one hour on friday. do the debate, THEN fly to DC to pose for photo ops. one day will not matter, nor will one weekend.

as some have said, it doesn't matter if either of these guys show up to talk about the crisis. ultimately, neither one holds the magic plan that must be delivered by hand that will "fix" the economy. the economy will still be in the crapper whether or not the candidates go this weekend... and it will rise out of the ashes due to actions and words by people other than john mccain and barack obama.

Doesn't have to be a day. These new fangled things called jets (McCain's wife owns one) makes it possible to do the debate in easily a four or five hour stint.

No, I said they should go and be part of the process.......and be informed....I said NOTHING about suspending the debates...

Don't try a bait and switch, one is not the same as the other.

I think Obama should have played it safe and agreed to suspend the debate and go to Washington. He should have agreed, but demanded that McCain set an alternate date, not just try to run out the clock.

It is annoying, but I think that would have been the safer thing to do.

It would just be too bizarre if Obama showed up and there is an empty chair.

Alternately Obama should have offered to have Palin and Biden debate on Friday.
I think it would have given Biden an even greater advantage to have Palin's cramming schedule expedited.

No way, in times of crisis the President doesn't get the luxury of calling a time out, you have to be able to do more than one thing at once.

I agree with Obama......he can do more than one thing at once, and the American people want to know what is going on....

IMO, Obama should say, "Hey, let's debate about the economy, since it is so important."

I think he's played it perfectly. Look at the response, both online as well as through SUSA. Public opinion is overwhelmingly in his favor, and McCain looks like a coward. No reason to give that up and let McCain look like a leader.

I disagree. McCain failing to show up to the debates would be huge mistake. No one is going to think its because of any sense of urgency to help in Washington when he can't do anything at all anyways. I think the number of basso's are far less than people with common sense.

So, on CNN, they report McCain wants to move Friday's debate to next Thursday and reschedule the VP debate for some other time. (I'm looking for cite)

Unbelievable... and incredibly transparent. Sounds like the Obama campaign will counter with a swap. Ha!

I like the idea of them debating the economy.

I hope you guys are right on Obama saying the debate must go on. His refusal ups the ante both for him and McCain, whichever way it goes. If the TV cameras show McCain in Washington on Thurs and Friday, while Obama is campaigning it could easily be to McCain's advantage. I hope not.

On a Hail Mary pass you don't send 9 men blitzing the passer. You play it safer.

If I were Obama I would show up, too, just to show that he can do more than one thing.

As a matter of fact I would be in Washington early tomorrow morning. I bet they both race there. After all Obama could campaign in VA which is in the DC Metro area and a battleground state.

ROFLMAO...now they are trying to hide Palin too.......amazing.....the wheels are coming off.

And I do think Obama should go to Washington and get involved, but not suspend the campaign and commercials.

Now is not the time to duck and run but to hit and hammer home the differences in agendas.

Haven't seen the Palin thing, but it really unmasks the political desperation of McCain.

I like Obama campaignin in VA and available to run over to the Senate if anything is happening.

think they're trying to suspend the VP debate, and using the bailout as a beard?

just shooting spitballs... no serious conjecture on my part.
