If I were Obama, I'd demand that if the economy is so important, it should be the subject of Friday's debate.

Well, let's give basso the benefit of the doubt and assume McCain quickly waited ten days before realizing there was a crisis.

Not as pathetic as McCain's poll numbers on the economy.

How awesome is it that basso was banned during McCain's high water mark?

And now he's back for his demise?

    karma rocks.

It's purely political, but it's also an astute campaign move. McCain gets a ton of great publicity, looks like he still cares about his Senate job, and the only cost to him is a couple of mentions of Obama's bailout ideas to make him seem like he's serious. He will probably have no effect on what is done, but even if he just goes to the Senate and sits and listens, he comes out looking good.

I'm sure it would've been really "patriotic" had Obama done it. You'd be commending him, right?

    Please.

Sometime in the not too distant future, someone is going to write a book on McCain's campaign and it ain't gonna be pretty. It is a disgrace that he has a real chance to be elected president.

basso, you are naive, ignorant and "pathetic" if you don't see McCain's move as political. Right now when it comes to McCain, you:

I think this is a result of the Dems putting the ball back in McCain's court. They aren't going to vote for the bail out unless McCain does. Frustrated with that strategy going down the tubes he tries for another Hail Mary pass.

Maybe McCain will invite Palin to help straighten this all out. After all she has executive experience so she is clearly superior to all the Congress.

One of these days McCain is going to do some abrupt move that will completely blow the lid off the market.

It's not going to fly, basso. What absolute BS. You know as well as anyone that this is a political ploy and an act of desperation by John McCain, who sees his campaign going down the toilet. Go ahead and parrot the latest McCain talking points and pretend he's your new hero, but anyone who isn't wearing blinders can see through this.

Pathetic? Yes, with this act, John McCain shows himself to be exactly that. Pathetic.

Here's McCain's statement (no link, he emailed me)

[rquoter]John McCain's Remarks on the Economic Crisis
    New York, NY
    Wednesday, September 24, 2008

America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration's proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country. [/rquoter]

asso, if McCain suspended his campaign when he was leading in the polls and momentum was with him, you could make a case that it was a patriotic act, maybe.

In Reality Land, where most us live, it is a desperate and blatantly political move by a candidate who has already sacrificed his honor and reputation in this presidential bid and has nothing left in the tank.

FOX News Poll: Obama Reclaims Lead Over McCain, 45% to 39%

Barack Obama has recaptured the lead — 45 percent to 39 percent — over John McCain in the presidential race, according to a FOX News poll released Wednesday.

As majorities of each party's faithful back their party nominee, the battle stays focused on that most sought-after group of voters: independents.

These voters, evenly divided between the candidates in August, swung to McCain earlier this month, which gave him his first lead over Obama since April. In this latest poll independents give a slight edge to Obama, though many have moved back into the undecided column.

Suspend campaigning for a couple of days? Fine.
Suspend the debate? Makes no sense. One hour, 9 p.m. EST.

A president will have to do far more than have a couple of days of meetings before an important one hour public appearance. That should be cake for either candidate! We need a leader who can handle this kind of schedule. Crises and important events don't wait for one another. Sometimes there are two in one week.

Have to say I'm honestly surprised at just how rash McCain is in campaigning. Just strange to watch. I mean, I wonder if he has ADD? Seriously.

PS -- basso, that "September 11" reference from John McC was especially for you! :)

mccain knows that if both candidates suspend their campaigns, he can avoid having his weakness on the economy from being highlighted by the Obama campaign and he can avoid being linked to bush economically. If Obama doesn't stay in that "politics free zone" then he can rip Obama for not being for "country first".
