So, if she has surgery to "fix" the condition and her internal testes are removed (thus reducing the amount of testosterone in her body), would she then be allowed to compete as a female?

I'm more curious about the potentially deadly issue that they discovered but won't elaborate on.

I thought having unused testicles in your body would be deadly. Hermaphrodites normally have the testicles removed (if they wish to live as a female), don't they?

What I'm wondering is that, since she has no ovaries and womb, she doesn't have periods. Wouldn't a lack of menstrual cycle for an 18-year-old alarming to begin with?

IIRC, I think a lot of world-class female athletes go without periods as long as their body fat stays at a certain very low percentage.

Now the whole world knows what she's packing downstairs. That has to be beyond humiliating. I honestly feel bad for him/her.

Runners have very irregular cycles. They can go months without them I know.

Guessed what it's her/his fault for hiding his/her sex that led to all this mess. She/he could've secretly tell them about her/his problem and people probably would've root for him/her but she/he lie about it.

Did it occur to you that she may have been unaware of the fact that she was a hermaphrodite? The article seems to be of the opinion that she was unaware of her internal testes.

I missed that part but there's no doubt about it that he/she must have known that there's something wasn't right about herself/himself.

I think she probably had a good idea what the tests would show. I assume doctors have told her and her family of her condition.

I wouldn't assume that, especially when it is from Africa(even though South Africa is more developed then other countries over there), and when things like a lack of period would be an embarrassing thing that she may not have discussed with anyone. I would guess the parents would be more likely to be frauds then her, but I'm giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. There is a House episode about a teen model that is a Hermaphrodite. House is fiction, but is generally based on real conditions.

    Maybe...

But maybe she didn't know. Maybe the cultural norms prevented her from getting good info. Maybe she mentioned it to a coach who didn't want to deal with it. Any number of things could have happened to keep her in the dark.

This person is just a kid really, and a kid with an almost unique problem from a different culture. So, I would withhold judgment for now.

Didn't know having internal testicles is a potentially deadly condition. Did the Rockets team doctors warn McGrady?
