Did I hear that they won't know the results until Friday on this one? And that her opponent is already asking for a re-count?
They will do a recount in the District G race. In some elections, there is an automatic trigger if the count is that close. In this case, they should do a recount. Thirty votes is crazy. I, personally, don't like Tatro as a person. Some of my relatives had him as a councilman and he was really inaccessible to them on some of their most basic issues. On others, he actually ignored them. One particular issue was the building of the TC Jester cut-through to connect Jester to its split (east and west) just north of 11th. In doing so, they had to develop quite a bit of land directly north of Timbergrove Manor for streets, a HUGE apartment complex and an HEB store that is now boarded up. In fact, the K-Mart across the street from the HEB is closed now as well. The problem is that all that development contributed directly to most of Timbergrove Manor being under 18 inches of water during Allison. My grandparents had lived in that neighborhood since 1955 and NEVER came remotely close to flooding until then. The added development along that stretch of the bayou (including another couple of huge apartment developments) were cited as part of the reason White Oak came out of its banks between Ella and 11th - something it had never done before. Tatro took the direct blame from many neighborhood residents because some of them complained about potential flood control problems and lobbied him to require developers to build retention ponds. He refused. For me, Parker got my vote for two reasons: 1. Unlike Tatro, I know she is responsive. I've met her and emailed her about isses and she has always been very responsive. 2. She has always been a watchdog on council. She fought Brown more than once and is a staunch number cruncher. I think she'll make a great controller.
Oh, don't you know, Its Lee Brown's fault this city is in a budget shortfall, when Bush spends way more money than the fed takes in, its called spending for the future. You also knew that even though cities and states all over are facing budget deficits, this particular one is Lee Brown's fault.
Well...not much to say...just a few points: 1. I will support White and hope he does well. The one thing that scares the hell out of me about him is that he was one of Lee Brown's budget guys. I really hope there is not a push to hike property taxes. The people here are taxed to the gills on their homes as it is. 2. Did White support the downtown hotel? I certainly hope not, because that is fiscally irresponsible. No way the city should be in the hotel business. If it were profitable, somebody would have built it.
