But Draw Mohammad Day was specifically created as a result of one person's reaction to the South Park brouhaha. Of course I am aware that the Danish cartoons were what started the South Park guys in that direction, but the average American (like the lady who created Draw Mohammad Day) apparently care very little about Danish cartoonists. They do care quite a bit about their South Park.

I said at the time, you can beat up on obscure authors all you want, but mess with South Park, and you risk awakening that sleeping giant of a demographic who would prefer to sit on the couch, eat Cheetos, and play PS3.

    EXACTLY.

And that's the source of the whole "no depiction" notion. Since it's pretty safe that no one will worship the depictions of those idiots on May 20th, there isn't an issue here. However, it's kinda like having a "draw a black dude with watermelon, koolaid, and a bucket of fried chicken" day.

Some fellas fail to remember the context in which those original cartoons were made. The depictions showed a turban with a bomb in it, insinuating that muslims are terrorists etc...it was nothing less than racist, disrespectful, and disgusting. Of course, it didn't warrant the idiotic response from some muslim loons, but it warranted peaceful outrage and requests for an apology for such hateful "art endeavors". Can you guys imagine the reaction of the black community if a newspaper published a disrespectful racist depiction of Martin Luther King (you know, think of the wildest black stereotypes and apply them here)?

And by the way, LOL at AroundTheWorld with another anti-muslim thread. You're on a roll, bro. Basso and TJ idolize you.

This sounds as impressive as the guy at Denny's taking a stand and letting everyone know he's ordering a side of Freedom Fries with his double bacon cheeseburger and large diet coke (because he's watching his weight).

Warning. Actual real depictions of Mohamed under this spoiler. If you are offended, you don't have to look (though you probably should).

Black people aren't still killing white people in the name of Malcolm X, so your point is irrelevant. Their thought process has progressed as the world has progressed and they have integrated into society as a result. This doesn't mean they aren't spoofed in cartoons and by comedians of all races.

Jews are mocked. Christians are mocked. The problem lies with the teachers of Islam who constantly look for excuses to harbor feelings of hatred and violence in it's followers, while other religions see it as an obstacle they have to overcome for being devoted and quietly focus on improving themselves. So the common people, not just governments, have to send messages that scapegoating won't get you anywhere and it's in human nature to push the limits, question ideologies, and adapt to change. Adaptation is essential to survival - clinging to archaic values just doesn't work anymore.

At worst, we'll see Christian zealots running around with anti-homosexual slurs on signs and a hick slaughtering one or two of them every 10 years, but no consistent mass killings of them. If they declared an all out war and went through the motions of backing up these actions, what do you think the response of the common people would be?

And that is why we, productive members for a peaceful society, must fight the intimidation.

I think perhaps you should learn how to count. There are more than 2 conflicts that don't involve Muslims. On top of that, just because it's in a region with Muslims present, doesn't mean it's based off religion. Learn2read. Maybe you think the pope is behind the war in Mexico?

You came to the party late but internal reform has already been talked about. Ya, Mathloom is much more knowledgeable than me (even if I don't agree with him on issues) on religion but you are right, no matter what he says, it's people like YOU who won't change. The issue is crazies like you who blindly generalize about all Muslims. You wanna piss off the extremists but at the cost of the rest. Look who's alienating now? What's predictable is the fact that you somehow can tie all problems to Islam. You're talking about how I am soooo defensive when you come in spewing garbage and expect me not to say anything?

I've said countless time, you can go ahead and draw the Prophet (PBUH) all you want. I have no issue with it. Go ahead and have fun with it. You wanna stand up to the Islamic radicals? Paint lots of pictures of the Prophet and sell it on ebay, make lots of money, and then go to Iraq or Afghan and buy some food for some poor Muslims there. Then you can say "Feck you radicals, I took freedom of speech and did more than what yall can for these people". But naw, that's not what this is about is it? This is about your fear of Islam and your dumb ignorant minds catering to what these radicals want, for you to promote the rift that they started. To me, you're a radical too but on the other side.

Btw, where were these cries 50 years ago? Oh ya, just replace the word "Muslims" with "Communists" and its the same damn story all over again. You types are all so gullible to fear mongering. Don't waste your time here and go listen to wingnut AM radio.

lol i thought they did all of the bleeping and censoring to make fun of the fact that muslims dont want him to be shown. i realize that islam does not call for idolism, which is why there are not many images of him or other great muslim caliphs, but seriously get over it and stop killing for pictures, it kind of makes your message look hypocritical

would you agree that almost every major war has a religious factor to it? whether it be christians, muslims, jews, they're all killing each other thinking they're on Gods side, when in fact killing is inherently against God's side, it's just so frustrating to me

I completely agree with your statement. And yes I will even agree that Islam has an aspect (Jihad) that is being blatently misused to validify violence.

I have high standards so I don't normally reply to 1 star posters, but for a Pakistani Muslim on the ropes I'll make an exception. Your cries of "fear mongering" and "nobody understands me" are typical for someone with a victim mentality who looks for scapegoating because they're too stubborn to implement change and introspect. I could wear a taboo jeans and shirt combination and that would piss off extremists - it doesn't take much. I highly recommend going through the post above yours.

How exactly are communist countries doing today? How many of them wish they adopted free market and democratic values earlier and acknowledge they were hindered by holding on to those archaic beliefs? All of them. Food would be nice for the poor in Pakistan in Afghanistan, but it doesn't change the system of thought they will grow into. I.e. the idiotic preachers they will be forced to respect and buy into. Call me a fanatic, call me a wingnut, call me a more sexually attractive version of Mohammed, do whatever works for you. At the end of the day I'm just discussing my opinions with grown men, not shoving it down the throats of impressionable kids. Acknowledge this first before you start looking for imaginary parallels to "strengthen" your faith.

Remember, it's not Islam people fear. It's having shrapnel lodged into your skull by a psychopath brought up under a flawed thought process.

Mulder - Post #62. Christians have adapted and progressed. Knight to bishop 4 trumps whatever you're getting at.

This is the part of the D&D where people ignore previous posts and start going in circles to validate themselves. So I'm out.

I rarely agree with Ronny, but always enjoy his posts.

In this case, he really has nailed the crux of the biscuit for many non-Muslims.

    Kudos, sir.

I also have high standards but for a personal slight, but I'll forgive you and try to educate you. You're cries of "adaptation" and so called "progress" are also typical. Typical for someone who afraid of something different and harbors as much hate as the person that supposedly hates you. Let's take an excellent quote from the book of Ronny shall we? "Remember, it's not Islam people fear. It's having shrapnel lodged into your skull by a psychopath brought up under a flawed thought process...". Wow beautiful....except it's an anticlimax to the point you are trying to make. You don't fear Islam but do fear the "thought process" which is what.....Islam in your mind right?

So again, your answer to this is to insult the religion rather than the ideology of extremism. If you truly did not fear Islam, your glorious celebration of free speech would not involve spitting in the faces of what you think Islam should be in the first place. Don't fool yourself....you are no righteous defender of free-speech. Rather you are at the same level as those Islamic extremists. Your stance under the guise of free-speech is almost as dispicable as the stance radicals take under the guise of religion . Hateful, sad, and scared.

    SG,

Perhaps Muslims (and I know this is true for me) feel no need to denounce these things because they consider their faith as different to the extremists as YOU do, therefore we are as obligated as each other to do so.

I know that this is why I don't go out of my way to do it. I don't feel under an obligation to do so because I don't identify with them in any way. They are not "my" people ethnically, racially or religiously. I don't share a connection with them.

This is a matter to be dealt with through the proper authorities, the police, nothing more nothing less. His religion is irrelevant to me and frankly none of my business.

If you want to take away the credibility of his views, I'll join you in supporting a push to remove the dictators who fund the propagators of these views through the protection of powerful, oil-hungry countries. That is something I can identify with and find to be relevant to the issue. A lawful and just method of removing the leech.

I wish the people doing this luck. It won't go well, and surely they will attract some lunatics. It's not an experiment, it's a certainty and I hope they have taken it into account.

Sounds like a veiled threat. Do you hope that people who draw a cartoon of Mohammad on May 20 live in fear for the rest of their lives that someone wants to kill them because of it?

LOL. I think free speech will survive with or without an internet-inspired "let's make a bunch of cartoons" day.

And the truth is your cartoon free speech day won't accomplish anything either. That's the problem with this. It's a protest with no purpose and no actual end goal.

The Selma freedom march had a purpose - to get voting rights. What exactly is the purpose of this one? What law do we want changed? What social issue are these people trying to change?

We already have a right to free speech, and it's not in any way threatened. So what are people aiming to accomplish?
